Job redesign is the deliberate change of what a job contains: which tasks it includes, which decisions it holds, what it is responsible for and how it is measured. When AI agents take on drafting and routine processing, the jobs around them need redesigning, or they change by accident. Done well, redesign makes the human part of the work clearer and more valuable.
Why does job redesign matter?
Agents change jobs whether anyone plans it or not. If nobody redesigns the work, people end up approving drafts they have no time to read, or doing the old job alongside a new one. Neither helps customers or staff.
Redesign asks direct questions. Which tasks has the agent taken? Which decisions now come to a person, and with what authority? What does a good day look like? Who is accountable for what the agent does? The answers become a new role profile and, often, a new place in the employer's structure.
How does redesign work in practice?
A practical redesign often runs like this:
- List the tasks in the current job and how long each takes.
- Mark what the agent does at each depth: reads, drafts for a person to send, or completes within bounds.
- Name the decisions that stay with people, including held items and escalations.
- Rebuild the job around those decisions, with time to make them properly.
- Set new measures, such as decision quality and red-line catches, instead of raw volume.
- Agree training and evidence for the new duties.
Redesign of the job usually follows redesign of the process. The process side is covered in how you redesign a process for AI agents.
An example
Take an accounts payable clerk we will call Ruth at a hospital trust. Before agents, most of her week was matching invoices to orders. The agent now matches routine invoices and drafts queries on mismatches. Ruth's job is redesigned: she decides held payments, handles supplier disputes and keeps the agent's list of approved suppliers current. Her measures change from invoices processed to errors caught and disputes resolved. Her title changes to "payables reviewer", and HR reviews how the new role is graded.
How is job redesign different from restructuring?
Restructuring changes the organisation: teams, reporting lines, headcount. It can include redundancies. Job redesign changes the content of a job, and may leave the structure untouched. The two can happen together, but they are not the same, and it helps to know which one you are facing.
Redesign also differs from job architecture, which is the employer-wide framework of families and levels that redesigned jobs are then placed into.

Questions people ask
Do I have a say in how my job is redesigned?
You should. The people who do the work know where the exceptions are. Ask to be involved, and offer specific examples of decisions that need a person.
Does redesign mean a pay change?
Sometimes, if the new job sits at a different level. It is not automatic. Ask how the redesigned role is graded before you agree to it.
