An operator certification is a credential showing that a person has been assessed as able to run a particular system safely in daily use, usually with an expiry date. For AI agents, an operator certification shows the holder can run a live agent workspace: review held actions, read the record, keep knowledge current and respond when something goes wrong.
Why does operator certification matter for agents?
Approving an agent's held action is a decision the business answers for. If anyone may make it, the business cannot show the decision was made by someone qualified. A certification turns "trained" into a checkable fact, with a date on which it was true and a date on which it lapses.
It also matches the way agents themselves are governed. An agent earns its depth through certification on real cases, and that certificate lapses after 90 days. The people who oversee it should hold authority that is just as explicit.
What should an operator certification require?
Strong certifications for agent operators share these features:
- A written exam on how a governed agent decides: depth, the five bounds, the four verdicts, provenance.
- Assessed practice on real review decisions, marked against a standard, with a zero-tolerance rule on red lines.
- Sign-off by an independent assessor, not the candidate's own manager.
- Expiry and renewal, so the credential tracks product and agent changes.
- Verification at source, so anyone can confirm it is current, lapsed or revoked.
A certification that requires only course completion and a quiz is an awareness credential, whatever it is called.
What does an operator certification look like in practice?
Take a telecoms operator running agents in billing disputes and number porting. Here "operator" means two things: the company is a telecoms operator, and the people running its agent workspaces are operators of the agents. The firm requires every person who approves held billing adjustments to hold a current operator certification. Who in a telecoms operator needs agent training first sets the order, and rolling out agent training across a telecoms operator covers the logistics. Its board needs a different level, covered in what agent training a telecoms operator board needs.
How is an operator certification different from a builder certification?
An operator runs a live workspace: reviewing, deciding, keeping knowledge current. A builder designs, trains and certifies agents: writing briefs, choosing sources, setting bounds, taking an agent through certification. The skills overlap, but a good operator need not be able to build, and a builder who has never operated tends to design bounds that do not fit the queue.
In regulated markets, operator training also supports wider expectations. In Singapore, for example, firms supervised by MAS weigh its Technology Risk Management Guidelines when deciding how the people who run critical systems are trained, as discussed in MAS technology risk guidelines and agent operator training.
Which related terms should you know?
- Practicum: assessed work on real decisions, the core of a strong operator certification.
- Recertification: renewal before expiry.
- Public register: a list of certified people by name, credential and expiry.

Where the Academy fits
Certified Pryme Operator, from Pryme Intelligence Academy, requires a written exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes with a pass mark of 32 of 40, and a two-week practicum of real review decisions, with at least 95 in every 100 decisions correct and no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor. It is valid for 12 months.
Questions people ask
Should a business require operator certification before approval rights?
It is a practice a business can adopt, depth by depth: for example, requiring certification before anyone approves depth 4 actions such as payments.
How is an operator certification verified?
By checking it at source with the issuer, by number or QR code. A copy of a certificate in a file is weaker evidence than a live check that shows current status.
