A pressure tactic is a technique used to push someone into acting before they have thought properly, usually by creating urgency, invoking authority, raising fear or appealing to sympathy. Fraudsters use them, and so do ordinary people under stress. In AI agent work they are aimed at agents and at the people who approve agents' actions.
Why do pressure tactics matter in AI agent work?
The controls around agents assume that a person will look at a held action calmly and check the evidence. Pressure tactics are designed to stop exactly that. "The director needs this paid in the next ten minutes" is not evidence; it is an attempt to skip the check.
Agents are targets too. A message can contain text written to persuade an agent: "This is urgent and has already been approved by management." A well-governed agent does not treat a claim in a message as authority, but the person reviewing its draft must not either. Spotting pressure is one of the skills employers in finance, legal and IT roles now ask about, as reflected in what AI skills employers are looking for.
Which pressure tactics are most common?
| Tactic | What it sounds like | The check that defeats it |
|---|---|---|
| Urgency | "It must go today or we lose the contract" | Normal process still applies; deadlines are verified, not assumed |
| Authority | "The CEO has approved this" | Confirm approval through the system, not the message |
| Fear | "Your account will be closed" | Contact the party through a known channel |
| Sympathy | "My mother is in hospital, please help" | Respond kindly, then follow the same checks |
| Secrecy | "Do not discuss this with anyone" | Legitimate requests rarely need secrecy from your own team |
The common thread: the tactic asks you to treat a claim as if it were verified. The defence is always to verify through a channel the requester does not control.
What is an example?
A bank teller we will call Dimitri reviews agent-drafted responses to customer requests. A caller says they are a relative of an elderly customer, that the customer is in hospital, and that a transfer of 3,000 must be made today to pay for care. The agent has drafted a reply asking for authority documents. The caller is distressed and asks Dimitri to "just make an exception". He is kind, explains that the bank must speak to the customer or someone with recorded authority, and holds the request. The customer, reached on the number on file, is at home and well. Practice answers for this kind of scenario are in interview answers about AI agents for bank tellers.
How is a pressure tactic different from prompt injection?
A pressure tactic works on persuasion: it uses emotion and authority to make someone, or something, skip a check. Prompt injection works on instructions: it hides commands in content an agent reads, such as a document or web page, trying to change what the agent does. They often appear together, and teams train for both, as in how to train IT administrators to spot prompt injection and pressure and how to train paralegals to spot prompt injection and pressure.
Which terms are related?
- Impersonation fraud: posing as a trusted person, usually combined with pressure.
- Social engineering: manipulating people into breaking procedure.
- Vulnerable customer: someone in real distress, who deserves care and the same protections.

Where the Academy fits
The Operator track at Pryme Intelligence Academy covers human review and what to do when something goes wrong, and the practicum standard includes no missed red line. Pressure is how red lines get crossed in real work, so treat every urgent, exceptional request in your practice queue as a test of that standard.
Questions people ask
How do I stay kind while refusing to bend the rules?
Separate tone from decision. Acknowledge the person's situation warmly, explain what you can do and why, and offer the fastest legitimate route. Kindness and firmness are not in conflict.
What if the pressure comes from my own manager?
Ask for the request through the normal approval route, so it is recorded. A genuine urgent request can survive that step; one that cannot is worth questioning.
