AI agent jobs and careers·Definition

What is redeployment?

Redeployment is when an employer moves you to a different role, often instead of redundancy. What it means when AI agents change jobs, and how it differs from a transfer.

Redeployment is when an employer moves a person into a different role within the organisation, usually because their current role is changing, shrinking or closing. It is often offered as an alternative to redundancy. As AI agents take on routine work, redeployment into review, exception handling and quality roles is becoming one of the main ways people stay employed.

Why does redeployment matter now?

When an agent takes over most of a team's drafting, the business faces a choice: reduce the team, or move people into the new work around the agent. Redeployment is the second option. It keeps people who already know the policies, customers and systems, which is exactly what reviewing an agent's output needs.

It is not guaranteed, and it is not always a like-for-like move. But knowing how redeployment works lets you prepare for it rather than wait for a letter.

How does redeployment work in practice?

Processes vary by employer and country, and employment law sets some of the rules. Commonly:

  1. The employer identifies roles at risk and tells the people affected.
  2. Suitable alternative roles are listed, sometimes with priority for those at risk.
  3. People apply or are matched, often with a shorter assessment.
  4. A trial period in the new role lets both sides check the fit.
  5. Training is provided for the new duties.

Your best preparation is evidence that you can do the new work. If you can already show review decisions or a relevant certificate, you are easier to match. Reading what job titles employers use for people who supervise AI agents helps you spot suitable roles on the list.

An example

Take a call centre agent we will call Fatima at an energy supplier. The company deploys an agent to answer billing queries by chat, and her team is told some roles will close. Fatima has spent the previous months volunteering to review the agent's held replies. When the redeployment list includes "AI review specialist", she applies with her decision record and is matched after a short trial. The reasons her background fits are set out in why call centre agents make strong AI agent reviewers.

How is redeployment different from an internal transfer?

An internal transfer is usually your choice: you see a role and apply. Redeployment is usually started by the employer, because something is happening to your current role. The new job may be at a different level or in a different team, and the terms of any trial period are often set by policy.

It also differs from an apprenticeship in AI operations or a graduate scheme, which are structured entry routes rather than moves for existing staff.

Questions people ask

Do I have to accept redeployment?

That depends on your contract, the employer's policy and local employment law. Refusing a suitable alternative can affect redundancy terms in some places. Take advice from HR, a union or an employment adviser.

Will a redeployed role pay the same?

Not always. Some employers protect pay for a period; others do not. Ask for the terms in writing before you accept.
