Agentic operations·Definition

What is a work queue?

A work queue is an ordered list of tasks waiting to be done, assigned to people or systems. How work queues change once AI agents do part of the work.

A work queue is an ordered list of tasks waiting to be picked up and completed, with rules for priority, assignment and deadlines. Operations teams run on them: claims to assess, payments to approve, complaints to answer. Once AI agents join, the queue splits into work the agent does, work it drafts for a person, and work it hands over.

Why does a work queue matter once agents act?

The queue is where you see whether an agent is helping. If cases move faster, wait less and need fewer touches, it is. If the queue simply moves from "to do" to "to check", the work has changed shape without shrinking, and people may be reviewing at a pace that makes their review meaningless.

Queues also carry the controls. Priority rules decide what gets attention first. Assignment rules decide who may approve what. Deadlines track regulatory clocks, such as complaint response times. An agent that feeds the queue must respect all of them.

How does a work queue work with agents?

With agents in the process, most operations end up with three queues:

  1. Incoming work, triaged by the agent: it classifies, prioritises and routes.
  2. The held queue: actions the agent has drafted and is holding for a named person to approve, change or refuse.
  3. The exception queue: cases the agent could not complete, passed to people to resolve.

Each needs its own owner, service level and staffing. Working through an AI agent's held queue each day describes the routine for the second, and how to staff the queue of actions AI agents hold covers capacity.

What does an example look like?

A general insurer's complaints team receives complaints by email, web form and phone notes. An agent reads each one, identifies the product, the issue and any signs of vulnerability, sets the regulatory deadline and drafts an acknowledgement for a handler to send. The incoming queue is now sorted by deadline and risk, not arrival. The held queue shows drafts waiting for approval. Complaints the agent could not classify go to the exception queue. The team lead watches all three: if held items age, she moves a handler from incoming triage to review.

How is a work queue different from an exception queue?

A work queue holds all the work, normal and unusual. An exception queue holds only the cases that fell out of the normal path because something could not be completed. A large exception queue relative to the work queue is a sign the agent, the data or the process needs attention. The day-to-day handling of exceptions is covered in working an operations exceptions queue with an AI agent.

How do you keep agent queues healthy?

Watch age as well as size: an old item is a customer waiting. Separate held items from exceptions so reviewers can work at the right pace. Show reviewers the facts behind each draft and their sources. Measure how often reviewers change or refuse drafts. A daily review checklist for the held queue is a practical place to start. See our guide to deploying AI agents for how queue design fits into going live.

Where Pryme fits

In Pryme, actions above an agent's bounds arrive in the held queue as drafts with their sources and the bound that caused the hold, so a reviewer can decide without rebuilding the case. Each approval, change or refusal is filed with the reviewer's name.

Questions people ask

Should the agent decide the priority of the queue?

It can propose priority based on rules you set, such as deadlines and vulnerability. Changes to those rules, and overrides for individual cases, should stay with the team lead.

What if the held queue grows faster than people can clear it?

Do not respond by raising the agent's depth. Add review capacity, narrow what the agent drafts, or improve the drafts so they need less checking. Depth is earned through evidence, not queue pressure.

Decide what your agents may do. Prove it. Enforce it.

Pryme Intelligence certifies each agent on your own cases, checks every action against five bounds at the moment it happens, and files every verdict.
