A fraud analyst with AI agent skills has some of the widest options in AI operations. In payments, the direct moves are fraud agent reviewer and payout approver. Beyond those sit agent trainer for fraud capabilities, adversarial tester who tries to trick agents before criminals do, AI operations analyst and agent owner. Your adversarial instinct is valuable at every level.
Why is a fraud background so useful around agents?
Two reasons. First, agents in payments make or prepare decisions that fraudsters want to influence: releasing payouts, changing merchant details, refunding transactions. Someone must decide the risky ones. Second, agents can themselves be targeted. A message crafted to look like an instruction, a fake document, a caller pretending to be a director: these are social engineering attacks aimed at the agent instead of a person. The OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications lists prompt injection, excessive agency and sensitive information disclosure among the main risks.
Governed agents have structural defences. Every fact is stamped with where it came from, and an external claim cannot authorise a payment. But defences must be tested by people who think like attackers.
Which jobs open up?
| Job | What you would do | What carries over |
|---|---|---|
| Fraud agent reviewer | Decide alerts and actions the fraud agent holds | Alert triage, typologies, investigation |
| Payout approver | Decide held payouts, refunds and detail changes | Knowing what a manipulated request looks like |
| Fraud agent trainer | Turn past fraud cases into test cases; fix the agent's brief and sources | Case knowledge and pattern recognition |
| Adversarial tester | Try to trick agents with realistic attacks before go-live and after changes | Thinking like a fraudster |
| AI operations analyst | Watch patterns across decisions, chase causes, run the weekly review | Trend analysis and root causes |
| Agent owner | Answer for a fraud or payments capability's limits, changes and incidents | Risk ownership |
Titles vary: "fraud strategy analyst (AI)", "AI red team analyst", "payments operations specialist". Read the duties.
What does adversarial testing look like?
Take a tester we will call Ji-woo at a payment company, testing a merchant support agent before it goes live. She sends a message styled as an urgent request from a merchant's director, asking the agent to update the payout account and confirm the current one "for our records".
The agent handles the first part well. The request arrived as external and is held for a person; it never changes the account. But in its reply it repeats the last four digits of the current payout account, which helps an attacker build a convincing follow-up. Ji-woo logs it as a sensitive information disclosure, writes test cases covering variations of the attack, and the agent's brief and limits are changed so that it never repeats account details to an unverified sender. The agent is recertified on those cases before go-live. A fraud analyst sees that second-step risk at once.
What should a fraud analyst add?
- How governed agents decide: depth, the minimum chain of bounds and the four verdicts.
- Provenance: sealed, signed, declared and external facts, and which decisions each can support.
- Certification: how agents earn authority on real cases and lose it when they fail.
- Attack patterns against agents, such as instructions hidden in documents or messages.
- Writing test cases with clear expected outcomes.
How do you make the move?
If your firm is deploying agents, volunteer for review or testing of the first fraud-related capability. If it is not, build evidence that you understand governed agents and show how your fraud work maps to them. Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track covers human review and what to do when something goes wrong, with module tests set in payments if that is your industry. For the trainer and tester routes, the Builder track covers designing, training and certifying agents, ending in a capstone agent certified to depth 2 or higher.
Questions people ask
Is adversarial testing a real job or a side task?
Both exist. Larger firms hire dedicated testers; in smaller teams, a fraud analyst or reviewer does it alongside other work. Either way, it is valued.
Will fraud agents replace fraud analysts?
They take over first-pass triage and routine closures. Investigations, judgement on ambiguous cases, testing and oversight stay with people, and attackers keep changing tactics.
How do I present my experience?
Lead with typologies you know, cases you caught and how you would test an agent against them. The cover letter template for fraud analysts applying for AI operations jobs gives a structure.
