AI agent jobs and careers·Answer

What jobs can a QA tester get with AI agent skills?

A QA tester with AI agent skills can move into agent evaluation, scope and refusal testing, AI operations analyst and agent builder roles. How each works.

QA testers are among the best-placed people for agent work. The jobs open to you include agent evaluation analyst, scope and refusal tester, regression reviewer for agent changes, AI operations analyst and, later, agent builder. The adjustment is that agents do not pass or fail like code. You learn to judge whether an answer is grounded, within bounds and safe.

How is testing an agent different from testing software?

Traditional testing checks that the same input gives the same output. An agent can answer the same case in slightly different words each time and still be right. So the question shifts from "did it match?" to "was it correct, was it grounded in the sources it was given, did it stay in scope, did it refuse what it should refuse, did it escalate what it should escalate?"

Those are exactly the kinds of gates a certification run checks. In Pryme, Attest replays an agent against real cases from the customer's own operation and scores each answer against a floor across seven gates: grounded, refuses, depth, escalates, scope, adversarial and stable. Each must clear on its own. A QA tester reads that list and recognises test categories.

Which jobs can you move into?

Role What you do Closest QA skill
Agent evaluation analyst Build case sets from real work, define what a correct answer is, score results Test case design
Scope and refusal tester Try to make the agent act outside its bounds or follow an injected instruction Negative and security testing
Regression reviewer Rerun the case set whenever the agent's brief, sources or limits change Regression testing
AI operations analyst Read the live record for drift: answers getting worse, more held, more refused Production monitoring
Agent builder Design and train agents, then certify them Test-driven development

Prompt injection and excessive agency are on the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications. A tester who can explain how they would probe for both is speaking a hiring manager's language.

What does the work look like in practice?

Take a QA tester we will call Mei at a software firm that sells billing tools. The firm builds an agent that answers customer billing questions and can issue small credits. Mei's job is to build the case set before it goes live. She pulls two hundred past tickets, writes the correct outcome for each, and adds forty cases designed to break it: a customer asking for a credit above the limit, an email pasted in that claims to be from finance, a request to change another customer's account.

The agent passes most cases. It fails on the pasted email, treating it as an instruction. Mei's report sends it back. That kind of finding, and the habit of looking for it, is what makes testers valuable here. Mei's path is laid out further in how a QA tester can move into AI operations.

What does a QA tester need to learn?

Three things are new for most testers:

  • Provenance. A fact can be sealed by the system of record, signed by a known party, declared by a person or external. An agent that treats an external claim as authority has a defect, even if its answer reads well.
  • Depth. Agents act at a level: read, draft, execute routine work, move money, coordinate others. A test should check the agent stayed at the depth it was certified for.
  • Domain judgment. To say an answer is correct, you need to understand the work. Pair with domain experts or learn the domain.

The move from QA tester to AI agent reviewer is a quick way to build the domain side. If you are worried about whether testing itself is changing, see whether a QA tester job is safe from AI agents. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers covers the wider routes.

Where the Academy fits

A QA tester can reasonably aim past Operator. Start with Foundations, then the Operator track so you understand how reviewers use the agent. Certified Pryme Builder then covers designing, training and certifying agents, with a capstone agent certified in Attest to depth 2 or higher. Labs run in a free Build workspace.

Questions people ask

Is agent evaluation the same as model evaluation?

No. Model evaluation tests a general model on broad benchmarks. Agent evaluation tests one agent doing one job for one organisation, on that organisation's own cases.

Do I need to know machine learning?

Not for evaluation, scope testing or operations roles. You need test design, a sceptical mind and enough domain knowledge to judge correct answers.

Will automated testing tools replace evaluation analysts?

Tools can run case sets. Deciding what a correct answer is, choosing which cases matter and spotting a new failure pattern still needs a person.
