AI agent skills by role·Answer

What should claims handlers learn before working with AI agents?

Claims handlers should learn how far an agent may act at each stage of a claim, how to weigh claimant evidence by source and how to review settlements.

A claims handler should learn how the agent works each stage of a claim, how far it may act at each stage, how to weigh claimant evidence by its source, and how to review a held settlement or decline before it reaches the customer. Those four skills decide whether claims get faster and stay fair, or just get faster.

How does an agent work through a claim?

Stage by stage, at different depths:

Claim stage Agent’s work Depth Handler’s part
First notification Captures details, checks the policy is in force, opens the claim 3, within bounds Samples
Coverage check Reads the wording and drafts a coverage view 2, draft Confirms or corrects
Evidence gathering Requests documents, chases missing items, summarises 2 or 3 Reviews the file
Reserve Proposes an initial reserve from rules 2, draft Sets it
Settlement Drafts the offer and payment Held at depth 4 Approves within authority
Decline or fraud referral Prepares the file Held Handler or specialist decides

Depth is earned on evidence from the insurer’s own past claims, not switched on. A handler should know which stages run without them and which return to them if certification drops: certificates lapse after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day.

How should a handler weigh claimant evidence?

By its provenance class. Every fact reaching a governed agent is stamped:

  • Sealed: from the insurer’s own systems, such as the policy record or payment history.
  • Signed: a named party answers for it, such as a repairer’s invoice from an approved network or a police reference.
  • Declared: the claimant’s own account of what happened.
  • External: emailed photos, a receipt from an unknown retailer, a web listing for a replacement item.

A claim for a stolen laptop supported by a declared account, an external receipt and a sealed policy showing cover is normal. The handler’s job is to judge whether that is enough for this value and this claimant, not to accept it because the agent assembled it neatly. An external document can support a claim; it cannot by itself authorise a payment.

What does the decision chain mean for a handler?

Every action the agent attempts meets five bounds: its role scope, its certificate, its sources, the insurer’s own limits (such as settlement authority and fraud indicators) and the platform guardrails. The lowest decides, and the verdict names which. When a settlement is held, the handler can see why: above the agent’s authority, a fraud indicator present, a declared fact that contradicts a sealed one.

Knowing the deciding bound saves time. A hold for value needs an authority decision. A hold for a contradiction needs investigation.

How should a handler review a held settlement?

Four questions, in order:

  1. Is the claim covered, on the actual wording?
  2. Does the evidence support the amount, given its sources?
  3. Is anything about the claimant or the circumstances unusual, including signs of vulnerability or distress?
  4. Is the settlement within my authority under the approver rule?

Then approve, edit, decline or escalate, and note any correction. Notes on why a draft was wrong are how the agent’s brief improves before its next certification.

What does this look like on a real claim?

Take a handler in a home insurance team. A held settlement for water damage is ready: the agent has confirmed cover, matched the repairer’s estimate to approved rates, and drafted payment to the policyholder. It held the item because the claimant asked for payment to a different account than the one on the policy. That request is external, so the agent could not act on it. The handler calls the policyholder, confirms the request was genuine because they have changed banks, verifies the new account through the insurer’s process, and approves.

How do other roles and markets compare?

Claims sits between operations and technology; see what operations managers should learn first and what IT administrators should learn first. Local insurance supervisors and data rules shape the detail: compare claims handler training in India with in Australia. Why handlers are the safeguard is argued in why claims handlers are the real control. The overview is in AI agent skills by role.

Questions people ask

Will agents decide whether a claim is covered?

They draft a coverage view. Confirming cover, especially where wording is ambiguous, stays with the handler.

Can an agent spot fraud?

It can flag indicators and inconsistencies between sources. Deciding that a claim is fraudulent, and referring it, is a person’s judgement.

How long before handlers are comfortable?

Most become fluent after a few weeks of reviewing live drafts, especially if they start on closed claims before go-live.
