No. Agents will take over much of the mechanical close, from bank reconciliations to accrual drafts, but a financial controller signs the numbers and answers for them. That accountability cannot be delegated to software. What changes is where the controller's hours go: less preparation, more review of agent-prepared work and more time on the judgements that move the result.
Why does the controller's signature still matter?
A set of accounts is a collection of facts and estimates. Facts, such as a cleared bank balance or a posted invoice, can come from sealed sources: the bank feed, the general ledger, the subledgers. Estimates, such as a bad debt provision, a warranty accrual or the useful life of an asset, rest on judgement. An agent can propose an estimate from history. It cannot own the view that the coming period will differ from the last.
Auditors, boards and lenders rely on a named person for that view. The controller remains that person, and an agent's draft only changes how much evidence they have in front of them when they decide.
What does the agent do in the close?
- Depth 1, read. Pulls bank statements, subledger balances and open items into one view.
- Depth 2, draft. Prepares reconciliations with proposed matches and explanations for breaks; drafts accrual and prepayment journals; drafts the variance commentary for management accounts.
- Depth 3, routine work within bounds. Posts matches below a tolerance the controller sets, and clears recurring items it has been certified to handle on the company's own past closes.
- Held. Every manual journal above a threshold, every change to an estimate and every intercompany adjustment waits for a named approver.
Nothing in that list removes the controller. It removes the hours spent assembling the file.
What stays with the controller?
- Estimates and provisions. The agent shows the history; the controller decides whether conditions have changed.
- Close sign-off. The decision that the period is complete and the numbers are fair.
- Unexplained breaks. A reconciling item the agent cannot match is a question, not a plug.
- Policy choices. Revenue recognition calls, capitalisation and cut-off on unusual transactions.
- The audit conversation. Explaining to the auditor how agent-prepared work was reviewed.
Related finance roles split the same way. The pieces on whether agents will replace credit controllers and whether agents will replace collections agents show the pattern closer to cash.
What does it look like in a real close?
Take a logistics group with twelve entities. At month end the agent reconciles every bank account overnight and drafts 40 accruals. One draft carries a fuel cost accrual far below the prior month. The agent built it from supplier invoices received so far, which is correct as arithmetic. The controller knows two carriers invoice late and a price rise took effect mid-month. They raise the accrual, write the reason, and the corrected figure is filed with the decision.
Next month the agent's brief is updated to flag late-invoicing carriers. No model weights change; the agent's instructions and sources do. The controller's correction became the improvement. Germany and India add their own reporting and supervisory context, covered in AI agent training for financial controllers in logistics in Germany and in India.
Which controls keep the numbers safe?
- Posting limits in the customer's own bounds, so no agent posts a manual journal above the threshold.
- An external claim, such as an emailed invoice, cannot authorise a payment or a journal on its own.
- A filed verdict for each posting, naming who approved it and which bound decided.
- Certificates that lapse after 90 days, so the agent's routine posting rights are re-proved on recent closes.
- Sampling: the controller reviews a share of the agent's depth 3 matches every period, not only the held items.
These controls only work if the controller understands them. That is why the argument in why financial controllers are the real control leads straight to training.
Where the Academy fits
Controllers who approve agent-prepared journals take Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track, about 14 hours plus a two-week practicum of real review decisions. Module tests are set in their industry and role. Controllers who also design the close agents can go on to the Builder track, which ends in a capstone agent certified in Attest. The broader guide to AI agent skills by role shows how the tracks map to finance.
Questions people ask
Will finance teams need fewer accountants?
Preparation work shrinks, so some roles will change or narrow. Review, judgement and exception work grow, and the team must be able to take the close back if an agent's certificate lapses. Size the team for that.
Can an agent sign off a reconciliation?
It can propose one as complete. Sign-off is a decision a person records, and many controllers require it for every balance sheet account above a set value.
What should controllers check first in an agent's draft?
The source of each figure. A balance from the bank feed is sealed; a figure keyed in from a supplier email is external and needs support before it moves the result.
