AI agent training for paralegals in legal services in France

What paralegals at French law firms must learn to work with AI agents: professional secrecy, e-filing, EU AI Act literacy, GDPR and a 90-day plan.

Paralegals and legal assistants at French law firms can let agents draft procedural documents, summarise case files and track deadlines, but professional secrecy and the lawyer's personal responsibility frame everything. They must learn how agents decide, how to check drafts and which actions need a named approver. Advice, filings, client correspondence and secrecy decisions stay with people.

What do paralegals in French legal services do?

The title varies, from juriste to assistant juridique, but the work is familiar. In litigation, paralegals prepare procedural documents, assemble exhibits, track deadlines set by procedure and the court, and handle electronic filings through the lawyers' secure network. In corporate practice they keep company records, prepare general meeting minutes and filings, and run due diligence data rooms.

Professional secrecy shapes all of it. The duty French lawyers owe to keep client information confidential is strict and extends to everyone working on the file. Paralegals decide every day what may be shared, with whom and how.

Anti-money-laundering duties apply to lawyers for certain transactions, and in France a lawyer's suspicion report passes through the head of the local bar rather than going directly to the financial intelligence unit. Paralegals often gather the client identification that supports these checks.

Where do agents fit?

Task Depth Kept by a person
Summarise the case file with each point tied to a document 1 Judging what matters
Draft procedural documents and exhibit lists 2 Lawyer's review and signature
Prepare company minutes and filings from instructions 2 Checking against the instructions and the articles
Diarise procedural deadlines from court notices 3 Spot-checks; any doubtful calculation
Submit an electronic filing Held Always a person, under the lawyer's authority
Release funds held for a client Held Authorised people only

A notice received through the court's electronic system is signed; a document a client forwards is declared; a letter from the other side is external. The agent's verdict shows which it relied on.

Will agents replace paralegals in France?

No. They shift the work from assembling to checking, and add new responsibilities: approving held actions, recording why a draft was wrong, and protecting secrecy in a system where an agent reads the file. The argument is in will AI agents replace paralegals?.

What stays with people: legal advice and strategy, always the lawyer's; anything filed or served; correspondence that commits the client; secrecy decisions, including what the agent may be given access to; client identification decisions for regulated transactions; and release of client funds.

Authority should be written down. An approver authority matrix for a legal operations team sets out who may approve each type of held action, from filings to fund releases.

What must paralegals learn?

The mechanics. Depth, the four verdicts (allowed, held, refused, withheld), the five bounds of the minimum chain and provenance classes.

Review. Checking a drafted procedural document against the file and the procedural rules; checking a summary for what it left out. Approving a held action means agreeing with its reasoning.

Secrecy in practice. Which matters and documents the agent may read, how access is limited, and what to do if an agent's output appears to include information from another client's file.

Certification. The agent is certified on the firm's own past matters; the certificate lapses after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1 the same day.

An AI agent competency matrix for a legal operations team records which paralegals have which skills, so a partner can see who may approve what.

Which French and EU rules apply?

The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) requires deployers to ensure sufficient AI literacy among staff who operate and use AI systems (Article 4). A law firm using an agent is a deployer, so training paralegals is part of compliance; see EU AI Act Article 4 AI literacy for AI agents in legal services. Article 50 requires people to be told when they interact with an AI system, which matters if an agent corresponds with clients.

GDPR governs personal data in client files, and the CNIL is the French authority. Article 5 principles, including purpose limitation and data minimisation, shape what the agent may see; Article 35 may require an impact assessment; Article 30 requires records of processing.

Lawyers' professional rules, set and enforced by the profession, impose strict secrecy, supervision of staff and anti-money-laundering duties described above.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How should the first 90 days run?

Days 1 to 30. Paralegals, associates, a supervising partner and the firm's data protection lead complete Foundations (about 4 hours). Keep records as Article 4 evidence. Decide which matters the agent may read. The agent summarises files at depth 1.

Days 31 to 60. Paralegals take the Operator modules on human review, teaching the agent and when something goes wrong. Procedural drafts and company minutes move to depth 2. The authority matrix is agreed and published.

Days 61 to 90. Paralegals sit the Operator exam (40 questions in 60 minutes; 32 correct to pass) and complete the two-week practicum. Deadline diarising moves to depth 3 after the agent is certified on the firm's own matters.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy gives a French firm Article 4 evidence it can show: a Foundations badge for everyone who works with agents, stamped with the product version, and Certified Pryme Operator for paralegals who approve held actions. Module tests are set in legal services and in the paralegal's role, and the admin view shows certificates and expiry dates across the firm.

Questions people ask

Does using an agent breach professional secrecy?

Not in itself, but access must be controlled. The agent should read only the matters it is assigned, and the firm should be able to show who and what had access to each file.

Can the agent submit filings through the lawyers' network?

It can prepare them. Submission should be held for a person acting under the lawyer's authority, because a filing commits the client.

Must clients be told an agent drafted a letter?

If a client interacts directly with an agent, Article 50 requires telling them. Letters reviewed and signed by a lawyer are the lawyer's work.
