No. Agents will take much of the document-heavy work, such as first-pass review and chronologies. They will not replace the paralegal, because the work that matters most is checking: that privilege is protected and a filing is complete and on time. A missed deadline or a privileged email sent to the other side cannot be undone.
Which parts of paralegal work suit an agent?
Paralegal work splits into volume tasks and care tasks. Volume tasks repeat and have clear criteria: tagging documents for relevance, extracting dates for a chronology, pulling key clauses from a stack of leases, checking that exhibits are paginated. An agent can do these at depth 1 and 2, producing drafts with each extracted fact linked back to its source page.
Care tasks depend on context and carry consequences: deciding whether a document is privileged, confirming a court's filing requirements, judging whether a client's instructions are clear enough to act on. Those stay with people.
What moves and what stays?
| Task | Agent | Paralegal |
|---|---|---|
| First-pass document review | Tags relevance and issues with reasons (depth 2) | Samples tags, resolves doubtful calls |
| Privilege review | Flags possible privilege | Decides, with the supervising lawyer |
| Chronology | Drafts entries linked to source pages | Checks entries, resolves conflicts in dates |
| Due diligence | Extracts clauses into a schedule | Confirms unusual terms, raises issues |
| Bundles | Assembles and indexes | Checks completeness against the order |
| Filings | Prepares the documents | Files, or holds for the lawyer to file |
| Client updates | Drafts | Sends only after lawyer approval |
Filing and anything sent outside the firm should be held at every depth. A firm can set that in its own limits, and the agent will treat those actions as held or refused.
What does an agent-assisted matter look like?
Take a commercial dispute at a mid-sized firm. Disclosure runs to 30,000 documents. The agent tags relevance and issues, drafts a chronology of 400 entries and flags 600 documents as possibly privileged because they include the firm's own email domain or the word "advice".
The paralegal samples the relevance tags and finds them sound. The privilege flags are a different matter. Many are internal emails forwarding a lawyer's advice to the client's operations team, which may or may not keep privilege depending on circumstances. The paralegal sorts them into clear, doubtful and not privileged, and takes the doubtful pile to the supervising solicitor. Two entries in the chronology carry the wrong year because the source email was misdated; the paralegal catches them because the sequence did not make sense. Each correction carries a reason and is filed with the decision.
The agent did a week's assembly overnight. The paralegal made the matter safe. Rules on legal professional conduct and data differ by country, as covered in AI agent training for paralegals in legal services in Canada and in France.
Which controls protect the client?
- No external send without a person. Filing, service and client correspondence are held for a named person.
- Source links on every extracted fact, so a chronology entry can be checked in one click.
- Matter-level scope. The agent works only within the matter it is assigned, which protects confidentiality between clients.
- A filed record of every tag change and every approval, useful if disclosure is later challenged.
- Lapsing certificates, so the agent's review rights are re-tested on recent matters.
What must paralegals learn?
They need to sample an agent's review efficiently, recognise the categories where it is likely to be wrong, check provenance before relying on a date or figure, and write short reasons when they overturn a tag. Those reasons drive improvements to the agent's brief. Paralegals who reach that level are well placed for a certified reviewer qualification such as Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track. Related roles are covered in whether agents will replace compliance officers and whether agents will replace caseworkers, and the case for the paralegal as the decisive check is in why paralegals are the real control. The guide to AI agent skills by role sets the role in context.
Questions people ask
Will law firms hire fewer paralegals?
Some volume roles will shrink. Firms will need paralegals who can supervise agent output across more matters at once, which is a more skilled job.
Can an agent decide privilege?
It can flag likely privilege. The call belongs to the paralegal and the supervising lawyer, because a wrong call can waive privilege permanently.
Can a paralegal rely on an agent's chronology?
As a draft, yes. Every entry should link to its source, and the paralegal should check the entries the case turns on.
