AI agent training for wealth advisers in wealth management in India

Indian wealth advisers need training to oversee AI agents on risk profiling, reviews and remittances under SEBI rules and the DPDP Act 2023.

India's wealth advisers need training that respects the line between advice and distribution, which SEBI draws firmly. Agents can draft risk profiles, review packs and remittance paperwork, but advisers must review every suitability judgement, approve every money movement, and handle client data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. Recommendations stay with the registered person.

What does a wealth adviser in India handle?

Indian wealth management splits into two kinds of relationship. Registered investment advisers give advice for a fee and must keep advice separate from distribution. Distributors, often within banks and wealth firms, sell mutual funds and other products and earn commissions. Many wealth businesses do both through separate arms, and staff must know which hat they are wearing in every conversation.

Clients include salaried professionals, business-owning families and non-resident Indians with assets in India and abroad. Advisers profile risk, build and review portfolios across mutual funds, equities, bonds and alternative products, manage nominations and family transitions, and handle remittances that must stay within limits on what residents may send overseas. Impersonation scams, including fake advisers in messaging groups, are a constant concern.

Where do agents help, and how far may they act?

  1. Risk profiling drafts, depth 2. The agent scores the client's questionnaire under the firm's methodology and drafts the profile with the reasons. The adviser reviews and discusses it with the client.
  2. Portfolio review packs, depth 1 to 2. The agent reads holdings from depository and fund records, which are sealed or signed, and drafts the review with performance, allocation drift and actions due.
  3. Nomination and KYC refresh tracking, depth 3. The agent identifies accounts with missing nominations or outdated KYC and sends routine reminders.
  4. Remittance paperwork, depth 2. The agent prepares the documentation for an overseas remittance and checks the client's running total against the permitted limit. The request is held for a person.
  5. Redemptions and transfers, depth 4. Held every time. An instruction received by message from a number not on file is external and cannot authorise anything.

What must advisers learn, and what stays with them?

Advisers need to review agent drafts with SEBI's separation in mind. How wealth advisers review an agent's decisions sets out the general routine. In India, the specific check is that a review pack prepared for an advisory client does not slip into product promotion, and that a distribution conversation does not present itself as advice.

They also need to understand provenance. Depository and registrar records are strong evidence of holdings. A screenshot of a portfolio from another platform is declared or external and should not drive a rebalancing recommendation on its own. A client's message asking to redeem and send funds to a new account must be verified through a channel already on record.

Advisers keep:

  • every recommendation and suitability judgement;
  • the risk conversation with the client;
  • redemptions, transfers and remittance approvals;
  • family and estate conversations, including nominee disputes.

The full list of lines is in what wealth advisers should never let an AI agent do, and the case for advisers as the safeguard is set out in why wealth advisers are the real control.

Which Indian rules shape oversight and competence?

SEBI regulates investment advisers, research analysts, portfolio managers and the securities markets. Registered investment advisers must meet qualification and certification requirements, profile clients' risk, ensure suitability, keep records and separate advice from distribution. An agent that drafts risk profiles or review packs works under these rules, and the registered adviser remains responsible for the advice.

The Reserve Bank of India governs foreign exchange, including limits and conditions on remittances by residents, and supervises banks offering wealth services. An agent that prepares remittance paperwork must apply the current limits from its sources and hold every request for a person.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 governs client data. A wealth firm acting as a data fiduciary must process data for a lawful purpose with notice and consent or another permitted ground, keep reasonable security safeguards, and respect clients' rights to information, correction, erasure and grievance redress. For AML, the FATF Recommendations set the international standard on customer due diligence and suspicious transaction reporting.

A 90-day plan

Days 1 to 30. Foundations for advisers, relationship managers, distributors and operations staff. Make the advice and distribution boundary part of the first session. Inventory agent capabilities by business arm.

Days 31 to 60. The agent drafts risk profiles and review packs at depth 2. Advisers correct with reasons, and compliance samples drafts for any drift between advice and distribution. Advisers who approve held actions sit the operator exam.

Days 61 to 90. Two-week practicum on live work, then calibration on twenty risk profiles and ten remittance requests. Nomination reminders move to depth 3 where proven. The training plan template for wealth advisers gives a format, and the full role map is in AI agent skills by role.

Questions people ask

Can the agent recommend funds to an advisory client?

It can shortlist options that fit the client's profile under the firm's methodology. The recommendation is the registered adviser's.

How should the agent handle a non-resident client?

Its sources must include the rules for non-resident accounts and remittances, and anything cross-border should be held for a person who understands the client's position.

What if a client is targeted by a fake adviser?

The agent can flag requests that do not match the client's history and warn them. Any redemption or transfer stays held until a person verifies the client directly.
