AI agents for operations leaders in fintech in Nigeria

How AI agents help Nigerian fintech operations with failed transfers, POS agent networks and tiered KYC, what stays human, and the CBN, SEC and NDPA rules.

Nigerian fintech operations leaders can use AI agents to resolve failed transfers, reconcile POS agent network activity, process tiered KYC upgrades and extract data from customer documents. Fraud freezes, agent terminations, suspicious transaction reports and complaint outcomes stay with people. CBN licensing and consumer protection rules, SEC Nigeria for investment platforms and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 apply.

What do fintech operations leaders in Nigeria spend their time on?

Failed and pending transfers. Customers are debited and the beneficiary is not credited, or a transfer sits pending while the customer watches their balance. Each case needs the status from the switch, the receiving bank's confirmation, and a reversal or completion. The CBN expects these resolved quickly, and customers complain loudly on social media when they are not.

POS agent networks. Many fintechs run networks of agents who offer cash-in, cash-out, transfers and bill payments from shops and kiosks across the country. Operations onboards agents, monitors their terminals, reconciles their float, investigates disputed withdrawals and watches for fraud by agents and against them.

Tiered KYC. The CBN's tiered KYC framework lets customers start with low limits and a basic identity check and move up as they provide more: bank verification number, national identification number, proof of address. Upgrade requests arrive in volume with documents photographed on phones, and each needs checking.

Where can AI agents help?

  • Failed transfer resolution (depth 3). The agent reads the status from the switch and the receiving institution, confirms whether the money moved, and triggers the reversal or completion under documented rules. Cases with conflicting statuses are held.
  • POS agent float reconciliation (depth 2). The agent reconciles each agent's terminal transactions, float top-ups and settlements, and drafts a daily position with exceptions. An agent network manager reviews.
  • KYC tier upgrades (depth 2 and 3). The agent extracts data from submitted documents, matches it to BVN and NIN records, and upgrades the tier where every check passes within rules. Mismatches go to an analyst. Our playbook on extracting data from forms and documents with an AI agent covers the extraction.
  • Document indexing (depth 3). The agent files each document to the right customer and type, records expiry dates and flags gaps, as in indexing documents into the document store with an AI agent.
  • Disputed withdrawal files (depth 2). For customers who say a POS withdrawal debited them but they got no cash, the agent assembles terminal logs, agent records and the transaction trail for an investigator.

Tier upgrades show depth earned per agent. Upgrading a customer whose documents and records all match is routine and the evidence is clear. Raising limits for a customer with a partial match is a fraud risk. The agent executes the first and drafts the second.

What stays with people, and why?

Fraud freezes and post-no-debit restrictions stay with trained staff. Freezing funds needs a lawful basis and evidence, and errors harm customers who need their money.

Agent terminations stay human. A POS agent's livelihood depends on the terminal, and the decision must be fair and documented.

Suspicious transaction reports to the financial intelligence unit stay with the compliance officer. Complaint outcomes, including disputed POS withdrawals, stay with people who can investigate and decide.

Which rules apply in Nigeria?

The Central Bank of Nigeria licenses and supervises payment service providers, mobile money operators, switches, payment service banks and other financial institutions, and sets rules on tiered KYC, agent banking, transaction limits, dispute resolution and consumer protection. Its AML and counter-terrorist financing rules follow the FATF Recommendations: customer due diligence, monitoring and suspicious transaction reporting. SEC Nigeria regulates investment and savings platforms and other capital market operators, including some digital asset businesses.

The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, enforced by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, governs customer data. It requires a lawful basis, purpose limitation, data minimisation, security and respect for data subject rights, including protection against decisions based solely on automated processing that significantly affect a person. BVN and NIN data should be used only for the purpose collected and only by the tasks that need it.

Nigeria has no AI-specific law. Fintechs with EU or UK operations face additional rules there.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How do you start in the first 90 days?

Month one: start with failed transfer resolution. Volume is high, the rules are written, and customers see the benefit. Map every status code the switch and partner banks return before the agent reads them.

Month two: shadow the agent on all failed transfers. Add KYC tier upgrade checks in shadow, comparing the agent's view with the analyst's.

Month three: certify failed transfer resolution at depth 3 within value limits and tier upgrades at depth 3 for full matches only. Follow deploying AI agents: train, shadow, certify, widen. For an EU fintech's view of the same work, see our brief on operations agents in French fintech.

Where Pryme fits

In Pryme, BVN and NIN responses from the verification service arrive as signed evidence and an uploaded utility bill is external until checked. The tier-upgrade agent shows which source supported each field, and its bounds allow it to upgrade only when the signed records match. Every upgrade and hold is filed.

Questions people ask

Can the agent reverse a transfer without a person?

Where the switch and the receiving bank both confirm the beneficiary was not credited, yes, within limits. Conflicting statuses are held for a person.

Can the agent detect POS agent fraud?

It can flag patterns such as unusual reversals or float movements. An investigator decides, and any action against the agent is a person's decision.

Does the NDPA allow us to use BVN data for this?

BVN data collected for KYC can support KYC and fraud checks. Using it for unrelated purposes needs its own basis.
