US bank tellers and universal bankers can move into AI operations as agent reviewers, fraud and exceptions reviewers, or AI operations analysts. Banks and credit unions use agents for service and payments, and people decide what those agents hold. Your counter judgement on identity, check fraud and elder exploitation is the core skill, and a checkable certificate proves it.
What does teller work look like in US retail banking?
US tellers still handle a lot of cash and checks, alongside account servicing, identity checks, wires and helping customers with mobile banking. Many banks have combined teller and banker roles into a universal banker job that also opens accounts and refers customers for products.
Fraud is constant and varied. Altered and counterfeit checks, account takeover, customers pressured into wiring money or buying gift cards, and financial exploitation of older customers all reach the counter. Tellers learn to notice when a regular customer's behaviour changes, and to slow things down.
How will agents change the work?
Each capability carries a depth, earned on the bank's own cases.
- Account questions, depth 1. The agent reads the ledger and explains balances, holds and transactions.
- Message replies, depth 2. It drafts replies; a person sends anything that commits the bank.
- Card freezes, depth 3. It freezes a card the customer reports lost, within bounds.
- Wires and transfers to new payees above limits, depth 4, held. A named person checks for scam signs and approves. Wires are hard to recall, which is why they wait.
- Reversing a settled payment on the bank's own rail: withheld. No agent may do it at any depth.
When an agent assists with credit decisions, US law requires specific reasons when credit is denied, which is one reason lending decisions keep a person involved. Why bank tellers make strong AI agent reviewers explains how your counter experience transfers.
Which AI operations roles are open to you?
US titles vary widely: operations specialist, fraud analyst, quality assurance associate, AI operations associate. Read adverts for review, exceptions, approvals, quality and escalation.
| Role (titles vary) | What it involves | Signs in the advert |
|---|---|---|
| Agent reviewer, customer operations | Deciding held items with a reason | "review queue", "approve", "exceptions" |
| Fraud and exceptions reviewer | Handling flagged scams and exploitation cases | "fraud queue", "elder financial abuse" |
| AI operations analyst | Reporting on holds; keeping procedures current | "metrics", "procedures", "process improvement" |
| Operations team lead | Running review for a team | "lead", "supervise" |

What do US employers look for, and how do you show it?
US employers read CVs (resumes) quickly, so lead with decisions: "stopped a gift-card scam on an older customer's account and escalated to the fraud team", not "processed transactions". Prepare for behavioural interviews with the interview answers about AI agents for bank tellers.
For proof, Pryme Intelligence Academy offers the Certified Pryme Operator, a professional certificate rather than a state or federal licence. It requires an exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes with a pass mark of four in five, covered in how bank tellers can prepare for the AI operator exam, and a two-week practicum of review decisions, nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, covered in how bank tellers can complete the operator practicum. It is issued through VerifyDoc.ai and can be checked at source by number or QR code.
Which US rules shape oversight work in retail banking?
There is no single federal AI law. Banks are supervised by the OCC, the Federal Reserve, the FDIC or state regulators such as NYDFS, and the CFPB enforces consumer financial protection law. Interagency guidance SR 11-7 sets expectations for model risk management, which reach AI systems used in banking operations.
ECOA and Regulation B require specific reasons when credit is denied, including when a model is used. GLBA governs the privacy of customers' financial information, and state laws such as California's CCPA as amended by the CPRA add individual rights. Colorado has passed an AI act aimed at high-risk systems that make consequential decisions. Anti-money-laundering duties follow the FATF Recommendations; an agent can flag suspicious activity, a person decides.
This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.
What does a 90-day plan look like?
Days 1 to 30. Earn the free Foundations badge. Rewrite your CV so every line is a decision.
Days 31 to 60. Work through the Operator modules and sit the exam. Lessons can be heard as audio between shifts.
Days 61 to 90. Complete the practicum, on a simulated queue in a free workspace if your bank does not use Pryme. Have the certificate issued, add its number to your CV and LinkedIn, and apply by duty, inside your bank first.
Questions people ask
Do credit unions hire for these roles?
Some do, especially larger ones. The review skill is the same, though the regulator and member base differ.
Is a fraud analyst role the same as agent review?
They overlap heavily. Both decide on held transactions with a reason. Agent review adds attention to what the agent proposed and which bound held it.
Will this protect my job?
Nothing can guarantee that. It gives you evidence that you can supervise the agents that take on routine work, which is where many remaining front-line decisions sit.
