AI operations jobs in consumer lending in Ireland

AI operations jobs in Irish consumer lending: the roles agents create, what lenders ask for, EU AI Act and Central Bank duties, and a 90-day plan.

Consumer credit in Ireland runs through banks, credit unions and non-bank lenders, and those using agents need people to oversee them: credit file reviewers, arrears reviewers, complaints reviewers and AI operations analysts. Agents prepare files and letters; a person decides on credit and money. The EU AI Act treats credit scoring of people as high-risk, so trained oversight matters.

What does consumer lending work look like in Ireland today?

Irish consumers borrow from the retail banks, from credit unions in their community or workplace, and from non-bank lenders offering car finance, personal loans and credit cards. Credit unions play a larger role in personal lending here than in many countries, and their members expect a personal relationship. The work runs from application through identity checks, income and expense verification, the decision, drawdown, arrears handling and complaints.

Arrears handling is carefully regulated in Ireland, with set processes for communicating with borrowers in difficulty and for agreeing arrangements. Staff who know those processes understand why an agent must hold, not decide, when a borrower is struggling.

What changes as agents arrive?

Each capability an agent has runs at a depth earned on the lender's own cases:

  • Application completeness, depth 1. The agent reads the application and lists gaps.
  • Affordability workpaper, depth 2. It drafts the income and expense summary. A payslip uploaded by the borrower is declared; statement data received directly from the borrower's bank is signed.
  • Decision letters, depth 2. It drafts the letter with reasons; a person sends it.
  • Arrears contact, depth 2. It drafts letters following the lender's arrears process; a person reviews and decides on any arrangement.
  • Drawdown, depth 4, held. A named person approves before money moves.

The credit decision itself stays with a person or a validated process the lender oversees. In a credit union, that often means a credit officer or committee, and the agent's job is to bring them a complete, well-sourced file.

The Certified Pryme Operator gives a lender something to verify. It is a professional certificate, not a government licence or a minimum competency qualification. You pass a written exam (40 questions in 60 minutes, pass mark four in five) and a two-week practicum of review decisions, nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor. It is issued through VerifyDoc.ai and checked at source by number or QR code.

Which rules shape oversight work in Ireland?

The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) entered into force on 1 August 2024, with obligations phasing in over several years. Annex III lists creditworthiness assessment and credit scoring of natural persons as high-risk. Article 14 requires human oversight, Article 26 sets deployer obligations, Article 27 requires a fundamental rights impact assessment for certain deployers including those scoring credit, and Article 4 requires AI literacy among staff.

GDPR Article 22 limits solely automated decisions with significant effects, supervised in Ireland by the Data Protection Commission. The Central Bank of Ireland supervises banks, credit unions and other lenders, including their consumer protection obligations and arrears processes. DORA adds ICT risk management duties for financial entities. If you consider a role with a lender in Northern Ireland or Great Britain, FCA Consumer Duty and AI agents in lending explains the UK equivalent.

Questions people ask

Are credit unions using agents?

Some are exploring them for application handling and member contact. Their committee-based decisions suit agents that prepare files for people to decide.

Does the AI Act require my employer to train me?

Article 4 asks providers and deployers to take measures for AI literacy among staff. How each lender meets it varies.

Can an agent manage arrears alone?

No. Under sensible bounds, it drafts letters and prepares options; a person decides arrangements.
