Yes, when the loan system calculates the figure and nothing needs adjusting. An AI agent can issue a standard settlement or redemption figure to the borrower, with its validity date and daily interest, at depth 3. Figures that need manual adjustment, any discount, requests from third parties without clear authority, and closing the loan stay with a named person.
Why can an agent issue the figure at all?
A settlement figure is a calculation the bank's loan system already performs: outstanding principal, accrued interest to the settlement date, any early repayment charge the contract allows, and fees. The agent does not calculate it. It requests the figure from the system of record, puts it into the bank's standard statement, and sends it.
That makes the task routine in the ordinary case. The borrower has a right to know what it would cost to clear the debt, and in many markets consumer credit rules give them a right to settle early and to receive that statement. Making them wait days for a person to press a button helps no one.
When does the figure stop being routine?
The figure is only as good as the account behind it. Several situations break the standard calculation:
- a payment is in flight, such as a direct debit due before the validity date, which the figure assumes will clear;
- the account is in arrears, with fees or interest under dispute;
- the borrower has a complaint open that could change what they owe;
- the loan has a rate change, payment holiday or restructuring that the system has not fully applied;
- the request comes from a solicitor, broker or another lender refinancing the debt.
In each case the agent prepares the figure with a note of what may be wrong and holds it for a person in the servicing team.
What may the agent do, and where must it stop?
| Task | The agent | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Requesting the figure from the loan system | Depth 1 | Nothing |
| Issuing a standard figure to the borrower | Sends the statement, depth 3 | Accounts with any condition above |
| Explaining the figure line by line | Shows principal, interest, charges and fees | Arguing whether a charge is fair |
| Issuing to a third party | Checks for recorded authority | Any request without it |
| Reducing the figure | Never | A person, as a negotiated or waived amount |
| Receiving the settlement payment | Matches it to the figure | Shortfalls or late payment |
| Closing the loan and releasing security | Prepares the closure | Approving the release of any charge or lien |
A reduced figure is a different conversation. Agreeing to accept less than is owed is negotiation, covered in whether an AI agent can negotiate a settlement on a debt. The word "settlement" also has a payments meaning, unrelated to this one; see what settlement finality is.
An example: a car loan cleared early
Take a borrower with a car loan who has sold the car and wants to repay. They ask the bank's agent for a settlement figure valid for ten days.
The agent requests the figure and checks the account. The next monthly payment of 300 is due by direct debit in four days. The loan system's figure assumes that payment clears. The agent issues the statement showing the total valid for ten days, the daily interest after that, and a clear line saying the figure assumes the next payment is collected; if it is not, the figure rises by 300 plus interest. The borrower pays in full a week later.
The agent matches the payment to the figure, confirms it covers the balance, and prepares the closure. A person releases the lender's interest in the vehicle, because releasing security is not undone easily.
What controls make it safe?
- The figure arrives sealed. It comes from the loan system with its calculation date. The agent cannot type or alter a number.
- A pre-issue check list. Arrears, complaints, payments in flight and unapplied changes are checked before every issue.
- Third-party authority recorded, not asserted. A solicitor's letter is external until the bank has verified the authority.
- Standard template only. The agent issues figures in the bank's approved wording, with validity and daily interest always shown.
- Closure held. Ending the loan and releasing security wait for a named person.
The full process, including volumes and timing, is in preparing loan settlement quotes with an AI agent. The broader limits are in AI agents in banking: what they may and may not do.
Where Pryme fits
In Pryme, issuing a figure and reducing one are separate capabilities. The first can reach depth 3 when Attest has replayed the agent on the lender's past settlement requests, including the awkward ones with payments in flight. The second is outside the agent's role scope. The figure travels with sealed provenance from the loan system, so the record shows exactly what was issued and where it came from.
Questions people ask
What if the borrower says the figure is wrong?
The agent shows the breakdown and checks it against the loan system. If the borrower still disputes it, the agent opens a query for a person and does not reissue a different figure on its own.
Can the agent issue a figure for a mortgage?
The same principle applies, but mortgage redemptions often involve solicitors and property security. Many lenders send these to a person by default.
How long should a settlement figure be valid?
That is set by the lender's policy and any applicable rules. The agent applies the validity period from policy and does not extend it on request.
