AI operator certification·Answer

Can you do the operator practicum without a job?

Yes. You can do the operator practicum without a job: you review a simulated queue in a free workspace, to the same standard as employed candidates.

Yes. If you have no job that uses Pryme, you do the operator practicum on a simulated queue in a free workspace. The standard does not change: two weeks of review decisions, nineteen in twenty correct and no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor. That puts the certificate within reach of career changers, graduates and returners.

What does the practicum ask of you?

The practicum is the second half of Certified Pryme Operator. The first half is a written exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes with a pass mark of four in five. The practicum then tests what an exam cannot: whether you make good review decisions, consistently, over time.

For two weeks you work a queue of agent decisions: approve, correct, hold or escalate. Your decisions are checked against a standard. You need nineteen in twenty correct, and you must not miss a red line, meaning a decision that should never be let through, such as a payment authorised by an emailed instruction from outside. A Pryme assessor signs off the result. The explainer on what the operator practicum is covers its design in more detail.

How is the simulated route different from doing it at work?

At work Without a job
Where Your employer's live Pryme Intelligence Workspace A free workspace with a simulated queue
Cases Your team's real held work Simulated cases set up for the practicum
Standard Nineteen in twenty, no missed red line The same
Sign-off A Pryme assessor A Pryme assessor
Timing Fits around your normal shifts You set aside the time yourself

The main difference is discipline, not difficulty. At work, the queue arrives on its own. On a simulated queue, you must turn up each day and work it properly. Treat the two weeks like a job.

Who uses the simulated route?

Career changers moving from another field. Graduates with no work history in operations. People returning after a break. People facing redundancy who want proof of a new skill before they apply. Freelancers, such as virtual assistants, whose clients do not use Pryme. And people employed in a firm that uses a different system, who want the certificate on their own account.

An example

Take someone we will call Helen, returning to work after five years caring for young children. Before her break she worked in an insurer's claims team. She completes Foundations and the Operator lessons over two months, mostly as audio while doing other things, then passes the exam. She plans her practicum for a fortnight when she has childcare arranged, and works the simulated queue for a few hours each day.

On day four she misses a held claim where the agent treated an emailed repair estimate as proof of cost. It is not a red line, but it is a wrong decision. She notes why and does not make the same mistake again. She finishes with the standard met and the assessor's sign-off.

Helen can now tell an employer about real review decisions, and the employer can check her certificate at source.

How should you prepare?

  • Finish the eight Operator modules first, especially human review and when something goes wrong.
  • Learn the red lines cold. Missing one fails the practicum, however good the rest of your work.
  • Block the time. Two weeks of steady work beats bursts.
  • Keep notes on each wrong decision, so you can talk about what you learned in interviews.

The operator practicum preparation checklist turns this into a list, and if you are still studying for the first half, read what is on the AI operator exam. The overall route is in the guide to AI operator certification.

Who should wait?

If you have not finished the Operator modules, or cannot set aside two steady weeks, wait. A rushed practicum risks a missed red line. Starting with the free Foundations badge is a sensible way to test whether the work suits you.

Questions people ask

Does the certificate show whether I did a simulated practicum?

The certificate shows that you are a Certified Pryme Operator and that you met the standard. If an employer asks how you did your practicum, tell them plainly; a simulated queue held to the same standard is nothing to hide.

Does a free workspace cost anything?

No. The workspace is free, as are the lessons, labs and tests. A professional certificate carries an issue fee, which you pay to be issued, never to pass.

Can I switch to a live queue if I get a job midway?

Talk to the assessor about your situation. The simplest path is usually to finish the route you started.
