Irish financial firms that use AI agents answer to the Central Bank of Ireland for the outcome, not the tool. Its expectations on governance, consumer protection and individual accountability, together with the EU AI Act, DORA and GDPR, mean firms need staff who can review agent decisions, escalate problems and show a clear record. That is the career opening.
What does the Central Bank expect of people who oversee agents?
The Central Bank supervises banks, insurers, credit unions, payment and e-money firms, investment firms and funds. It has no separate rulebook for AI agents. Instead, the duties firms already carry apply to whatever does the work: treating customers fairly and in their best interests, managing operational and ICT risk, keeping proper records, and holding named people responsible.
Ireland also has an individual accountability framework. In substance, it sets conduct standards that apply to staff in many roles, and asks firms to map clearly which senior executive is responsible for what. Alongside it, people in certain roles must meet standards of fitness and probity. When an agent sits inside a process, those maps have to say who answers for it, and the staff around it must act to the conduct standards in what they approve.
The EU layer adds specifics. DORA, which applies from 17 January 2025, covers ICT incidents and third-party providers. The EU AI Act asks deployers of high-risk systems, such as credit scoring of individuals, to assign human oversight to people with the competence, training and authority to do it. GDPR, supervised in Ireland by the Data Protection Commission, governs the personal data involved.
Who is covered?
Any firm the Central Bank regulates, from a large retail bank to a small payment institution. Ireland hosts many EU operations of international firms, including fund administrators, insurers and payment companies, so the pool of employers is wider than the domestic high-street banks.
Outside finance, the Central Bank's expectations do not apply, but the EU AI Act and GDPR still do. The Data Protection Commission's role also matters for technology firms with European headquarters in Ireland, which run large customer operations where agents may handle personal data.
The Central Bank's view on the staff side is set out in more detail in Central Bank of Ireland expectations for staff overseeing AI agents.
What roles and competence does this create?
Irish adverts use many titles: operations analyst, customer care specialist, quality assurance associate, arrears support officer, first-line risk analyst. Read the duties for the work: review, exceptions, approvals, quality checks, escalation and incident logging.
The roles that carry agent oversight in Irish firms are:
- Customer and account servicing reviewer. Approves agent-drafted responses and account changes. Many come from branch or contact centre roles; the route is laid out in AI operations careers for bank tellers in Ireland.
- Arrears and collections reviewer. Checks agent-drafted arrangements and letters to borrowers in difficulty, where consumer protection expectations are strict. See AI operations careers for collections agents in Ireland.
- Quality assurance and first-line risk. Samples agent decisions and reports patterns to the agent owner.
- ICT incident coordinator. Logs agent and provider failures and supports DORA reporting.
- Agent owner. Answers for one agent's scope and performance, usually an experienced team lead who sits on the responsibility map.
The competence that ties these together is acting to the conduct standards in every approval. You review with care, you do not approve what you do not understand, and you escalate what falls outside your authority.
How do you show employers you meet these expectations?
| Requirement | What employers will expect of you | How to show it |
|---|---|---|
| Act in customers' best interests | Reject agent drafts that would harm or mislead a customer | Examples of drafts you changed and why |
| Conduct standards for staff | Act with integrity, due skill, care and diligence in each approval | A record of review decisions to a stated standard |
| Clear responsibility | Know whose decision each action is and escalate beyond your authority | Your escalation notes and who received them |
| ICT incidents under DORA | Report agent or provider failures through the right channel | A short account of an incident you raised |
| Human oversight under the EU AI Act | Understand the agent's limits and override or stop it when needed | A practical assessment or practicum result |
| GDPR | Keep agent work inside its purpose and protect customer data | An example of a data question you raised |

What could an Irish interviewer ask?
Irish financial services interviews often use competency questions in the "tell me about a time" style. Prepare stories you can adapt:
- "Tell me about a time you refused to do something a system recommended." Choose a case where you checked the facts, disagreed and recorded why.
- "An agent proposes the same standard arrangement for every arrears case this morning. What do you think is happening?" A good answer suspects a source or bound problem, stops approvals, samples cases and tells the agent owner.
- "Who in our firm would be accountable if an agent mistreated a customer?" Say that the responsibility map names senior people, and that your part is to approve only what you would defend.
A candidate we will call Aoife, a branch customer service officer, prepared her answers around vulnerable customers she had helped at the counter. That made the conduct standards concrete rather than abstract.
What do these expectations not cover?
They do not certify individual reviewers or require a specific course. They do not reach firms the Central Bank does not regulate. They do not answer employment law questions such as how decision logs may be used in performance reviews; those depend on employment law and your contract. Teams that run Pryme Intelligence workspaces can choose to tie approval rights to a current operator certificate, but that is an employer's practice, not a Central Bank rule.
They also differ in detail from other EU markets. The EU rules are shared, but national supervisors and workplace habits vary, as the comparison with De Nederlandsche Bank and AFM expectations shows.
This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.
Questions people ask
Do I need to be in a controlled function to oversee agents?
No. Most reviewers are not in controlled functions. The conduct standards that apply to staff more broadly still shape how you are expected to review, and senior oversight sits with people on the responsibility map.
Are AI operations roles in Ireland mostly in Dublin?
Many financial firms cluster in Dublin, but operations and service centres exist elsewhere and some roles are hybrid. Read the location and working pattern in each advert rather than assuming.
