Counter work teaches the judgement AI operations employers need, and a bank teller's cover letter should show it plainly. Describe the identity checks you make, the transactions you refer, the scams you have spotted and the vulnerable customers you protect. Keep it short and specific. A ready-to-copy letter and a filled retail banking sample follow.
What should a teller's letter emphasise?
Retail banks use agents for account queries, payment preparation, card replacements and address changes. Reading balances is depth 1; drafting a reply is depth 2; some routine servicing may run at depth 3 within the bank's limits. Anything that moves money or is hard to undo is depth 4, and banks commonly hold it for a person. The people who decide those held items need to know what a scam looks like, how identity is proved and when a customer needs protecting from their own instruction.
Tellers know this from the counter. You have watched a customer withdraw a large sum while on the phone to someone "from the bank". You have checked identity against what the bank holds, not against the story you are told. Your letter should give one moment like that. What jobs a bank teller can get with AI agent skills lists the usual targets, with reviewer the most common first step.
Titles vary: payments reviewer, servicing specialist, fraud operations associate, decision analyst. Read the duties. Approvals, exceptions, escalation and quality checks all signal AI operations work.
How do you use the template?
- Keep the tone calm and exact; banks hire for care, not enthusiasm.
- Use one scam or referral example, without customer details.
- Make your red line about payments or account changes.
- If you mention a certificate, give enough detail to check it.
- Do not claim knowledge of the bank's systems you do not have.

Dear [name of hiring manager],
I am applying for the [role title] position at [bank or employer]. I have worked as a teller at [type of branch] for [years], where I handle [types of transactions], check identity, and refer anything that does not look right to [who].
[One example: what the customer asked, what you noticed, what you checked against, what you did, what happened.]
I understand that when an agent prepares payments or account changes, the decisions it holds are the ones that need a person. I would never release [your red line] without [the check], because [reason].
[Certificate, issuer, valid to month and year, checkable at source; or a course in progress with expected completion.]
Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the chance to discuss it.

Dear Ms Collins,
I am applying for the Payments Reviewer position at your bank's operations centre. I have worked as a teller at a busy high-street branch for eight years, where I handle cash, transfers and account changes, check identity, and refer anything that does not look right to the branch fraud lead.
An elderly customer asked to withdraw most of her savings in cash, saying it was for building work. She kept checking her phone and could not say who the builder was. I asked a few gentle questions, checked her usual activity, and referred the request. The fraud lead confirmed she was being coached by a caller pretending to be from the bank. She kept her savings.
I understand that when an agent prepares payments or account changes, the decisions it holds are the ones that need a person. I would never release a large payment to a new payee straight after a change of phone number or email on the account, because that sequence is how account takeovers often work.
I am working through an operator course on governed agents, including a practicum on a simulated payments queue, and expect to finish within three months.
Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the chance to discuss it.
Yours sincerely, Ade Okafor
Why does it work?
Ade's example shows three habits in a few lines: noticing behaviour, checking against the record, and referring rather than deciding alone. His red line, a payment straight after a contact-detail change, is precise and specific to banking. He is honest that his course is in progress.
Neighbouring letters handle different evidence: the collections agent template centres on affordability, and the compliance analyst template on policy testing. Questions people ask
Should I mention branch sales targets?
Usually not. AI operations roles hire for judgement and care. If sales results show you understood customers' needs, one line is enough; leave the space for review evidence.
Can I apply internally at my own bank?
Often that is the easiest route, because you already know the bank's policies and products. Ask your manager whether operations or servicing teams are taking on review work.
How should I describe a scam without breaking confidentiality?
Remove anything that could identify the customer: names, branch, dates and exact amounts. Describe the pattern, what you checked and what you did.
