Through the judgment you use at the counter: checking identity, spotting a customer coached by a fraudster, knowing when a withdrawal does not add up. Retail banks now use AI agents for routine servicing, and someone must review what those agents hold back. Learn how governed agents work, get a checkable certificate and apply for servicing review roles.
What does a teller know that an agent struggles with?
A teller's work looks transactional from outside. Inside, it is full of reading people and situations.
- Scam signs. A customer withdrawing a large sum in cash, unusually nervous, on the phone to someone while at the counter. You know what that means.
- Vulnerability. You recognise confusion, bereavement or pressure from a relative, and you know when to slow down.
- Identity. You know which documents prove what, and when something about them feels wrong.
- Branch reality. You know which requests customers make in person because they could not get them done online.
When servicing moves to agents, those signals arrive as messages and account activity instead of a face at the counter. The bank still needs someone who knows what they mean.
What will the agent do, and what will you do?
| Situation | The agent | You |
|---|---|---|
| Balance or statement request | Answers at depth 1 | Spot-check samples |
| Address change | Drafts at depth 2; held if identity checks are weak | Confirm against the sealed customer record |
| Standing order or payee change | Held for a named person | Look for signs of fraud or coercion |
| Large or unusual outgoing payment | Never executes without approval | Decide, or escalate to the fraud team |
| Customer mentions confusion, bereavement or pressure | Holds and flags | Decide how to respond and whether to refer |
A governed agent's facts carry their source. The bank's core ledger is sealed; a customer's own account of why they need the money is declared and unverified. Weighing the two is what you did at the counter, now done on screen.
What should you learn?
- How governed agents decide. Depth, the four verdicts, and the rule that the tightest of five bounds decides each action.
- How fraud looks in text. You know it face to face. Practise reading it in messages: urgency, scripted phrases, requests to move money "to keep it safe".
- How to write up a pattern. If the agent misses the same scam sign repeatedly, your write-up is what gets its brief fixed.
What does the move look like in practice?
Take a teller we will call Ben at a building society closing two of its branches. The society is using an agent to handle routine servicing messages. Ben applies to the review team. In his first month he catches several held payee changes where customers had written, almost word for word, the same reason for an urgent transfer. Each looked fine alone. Together they matched a scam script he had seen at the counter. He writes it up; the fraud team adds the phrasing to the agent's hold rules.
The insight came from branch experience, not technology. That is the case you make when you apply.
Which jobs should you apply for first?
Titles vary, so read duties: review of automated servicing decisions, fraud and scam referrals, vulnerable customer handling, approvals and escalation. Look for servicing operations, customer protection, payments review or AI operations analyst roles. Banks that are reducing branches sometimes create these roles internally first; ask.

Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's free Foundations course explains how agents are governed in about four hours. The Operator track then trains you to review live work, with module tests set in retail banking and your role. If your bank does not use Pryme, you complete the two-week practicum on a simulated queue. The certificate is checkable by number or QR code through VerifyDoc.ai.
Questions people ask
Is a teller job safe from AI agents?
Branch work is changing, and routine servicing is moving online and to agents. Read whether a bank teller job is safe from AI agents for a fuller answer; the protective move is toward judgment-based work.
Will I need to learn about lending or investments?
Not for servicing review roles. If you want to move into lending operations later, you will need to learn credit policy, and the rules there are tighter.
Can I stay customer-facing?
Some banks combine review with handling escalated customers by phone or in remaining branches. Ask about the mix when you apply.
