Document review is close kin to reviewing an agent's work, and a paralegal's cover letter for AI operations jobs should make that link plain. Show how you check extracted clauses, summaries and citations against the source, how you protect privilege, and how you flag what a first pass missed. A template and a filled legal services sample follow.
Why are paralegals strong candidates?
Law firms and legal teams use agents to read large volumes: extracting clauses from contracts, summarising disclosure, preparing due diligence reports, drafting first versions of standard documents and checking cross-references. Most of this runs at depth 1 and 2: the agent reads and drafts, a person decides what goes out. The main risks are familiar to any paralegal: a summary that misstates a clause, a quotation that is not in the document, a citation that does not say what the draft claims, and privileged material reaching the wrong person.
A reviewer of legal agent work must check against the source every time, which is how paralegals are trained to work. A trainer, who builds the test cases an agent must pass, needs to know which clauses are routinely misread. Both roles suit paralegals. What jobs a paralegal can get with AI agent skills lists them in more detail.
Titles include legal operations analyst, document review lead, legal AI reviewer and knowledge analyst. Read the duties for review, quality, exceptions and escalation.
How should you adapt it?
- Choose an example where a first pass, by a person or a tool, missed or misstated something.
- Say how you found it: what you compared with what.
- Keep client and matter details out entirely.
- Make your red line about citations, quoted text or privilege.
- The general structure is in how to write a cover letter for an AI operations role.
The template
- Opening: I am applying for [role] at [employer]. I have worked as a paralegal for [years] in [practice area] at [type of organisation], mainly on [document review, due diligence, drafting, research].
- Example: [What the first pass said, what the source actually said, how you found the difference, what changed.]
- Red line: If an agent summarised or drafted legal documents, I would never let [red line] go out without [the check], because [reason].
- Privilege and access: [One sentence on how you protect privileged or confidential material, and what you would expect of an agent's access.]
- Proof: [Certificate, issuer, valid to month and year, checkable at source by number or QR code; legal qualifications.]
- Close: I would welcome the chance to discuss the role.

Dear Ms Delaney,
I am applying for the Legal AI Reviewer position at your firm. I have worked as a paralegal for five years in commercial property at a mid-sized law firm, mainly on lease reviews, due diligence reports and first drafts of standard documents.
On a portfolio acquisition, the first-pass report summarised a lease as having a tenant break option "on the fifth anniversary". Reading the clause itself, I found the break was conditional on the tenant having paid all rent and given vacant possession, and that the tenant had arrears. The report went to the partner with the condition and the arrears highlighted, which changed the valuation discussion.
If an agent summarised or drafted legal documents, I would never let a quoted clause or a cited authority go out without checking it word for word against the source, because a confident summary of a clause that says something slightly different is worse than no summary.
I keep privileged material within the matter team and check distribution lists before anything is sent. I would expect an agent's access to match the matter team's and no wider.
I hold the Certified Pryme Operator certificate, issued through VerifyDoc.ai and checkable at source, and I am studying for a paralegal qualification.
I would welcome the chance to discuss the role.
Yours sincerely, Rhys Evans
What makes it effective?
Rhys shows the gap between a summary and the clause, which is exactly the failure a grounded agent must avoid and a reviewer must catch. His red line is precise, word for word against the source, and his access sentence shows he knows confidentiality applies to agents as well as people.
Others build on different strengths. The fraud analyst cover letter template focuses on doubtful evidence, and the collections agent template on customer harm. For the move overall, see how a paralegal can move into AI operations and the AI agent jobs and careers guide.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track teaches human review and teaching the agent, with module tests set in legal services if that is your field. Paralegals who enjoy building test sets from tricky clauses can continue to the Builder track, which ends with a capstone agent certified in Attest to depth 2 or higher.
Questions people ask
Do I need to be a qualified lawyer for these roles?
Usually not. Many legal AI review roles hire paralegals and legal executives. Roles that sign off advice still need a qualified lawyer, and adverts say so.
Should I mention legal research tools I use?
Describe them by type, such as a case law database, unless the advert names one. Your ability to check a citation against the source matters more than the database you used.
Can paralegals move into AI roles outside law firms?
Yes. Contract review, compliance and procurement teams in banks, insurers and public bodies all need people who read documents carefully and know where errors hide.
