Paralegals with agent skills are well placed for document review supervisor, contract review quality analyst, legal operations analyst and knowledge owner roles. The common thread is checking what an agent extracted or drafted against the source, and knowing which findings a lawyer must see. If you have run a disclosure or due diligence exercise, you have done half of it.
Where do agents enter a paralegal's work?
The first agents in legal work do first-pass reading. In a due diligence exercise, an agent reads hundreds of leases or supply contracts and extracts the change of control clause, the break dates, the assignment restrictions and the governing law. In litigation, it sorts documents for relevance and flags possible privilege. In debt recovery, it drafts letters before action from the account file.
Each of these is depth 2 work: the agent prepares and a person decides. The paralegal used to do the reading. Now the paralegal checks the reading, and that changes the skill. You are no longer judged on how many documents you got through. You are judged on how reliably you catch the wrong extraction.
Which roles can you aim for?
Job titles in legal operations are inconsistent. Look for review, quality, supervision and knowledge duties.
| Role | What you do | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Document review supervisor | Check agent relevance and privilege calls; sample its "not relevant" pile | Litigation and investigations teams |
| Contract review quality analyst | Verify extracted clauses against the source; log error patterns | Corporate, real estate, commercial teams |
| Legal operations analyst | Measure agent performance, held work and turnaround across matters | Larger firms and in-house legal teams |
| Precedent and knowledge owner | Maintain the clause library and playbooks the agent reads | Knowledge management teams |
| Recoveries reviewer | Approve agent-drafted letters before action and payment plans | Debt recovery practices |
The recoveries route overlaps with collections work. Collections agents moving into agent oversight compete for some of the same reviewer roles, so it helps to know how they position themselves.
What does a paralegal keep that an agent cannot?
Privilege decisions belong to lawyers, but the paralegal is usually the one who spots the document that might be privileged. An agent can flag "legal advice" language. It may miss an email between a client and an accountant that was prepared for litigation. Your sense of context is the control.
The same applies to extraction. An agent reading a lease can report a break date accurately and still miss that a side letter changed it. A paralegal who asks "is there anything that varies this?" catches what the agent never saw. Filing, service, signing and advice stay with people throughout.
What does a good review catch look like?
Take a paralegal we will call Hannah at a firm handling a portfolio acquisition. An agent extracts key terms from two hundred leases and Hannah reviews a sample of its work each day. She notices the agent records "no landlord consent needed for assignment" for a group of leases that refer to a separate deed of variation. The agent was only given the leases. Hannah raises it, the deeds are added to its sources, and the agent reruns those files.
That is the kind of catch interviewers ask about. The move from paralegal to AI agent reviewer explains how to turn examples like Hannah's into an application.
How do you present this to a law firm or in-house team?
Lawyers are trained to be sceptical. Give them evidence:
- the type of exercise you supervised and the error patterns you found;
- how you sampled the agent's work, and why that sample size;
- a certificate the firm can check at source rather than a training attendance note.
If you want to step further from fee-earning work, the route through how a paralegal can move into AI operations is the one to read, and the guide to AI agent jobs and careers shows the full ladder.
Where the Academy fits
The Operator track at Pryme Intelligence Academy covers human review, teaching the agent and keeping knowledge current, which match supervisor and knowledge owner roles closely. Module tests are set in your own industry and role. The practicum asks for nineteen in twenty correct review decisions and no missed red line, which is a fair test of a review supervisor.
Questions people ask
Will agents replace paralegals in document review?
They take over first-pass reading in many exercises. The supervision, sampling and judgment calls grow, and those need people who understand legal documents.
Can I move in-house with these skills?
Yes. In-house legal teams use agents for contract intake and review, and often want one person who understands both the contracts and the agent's record.
Do I need to be qualified to supervise review?
Not to supervise first-pass review or run quality checks. Final calls on privilege and anything that is legal advice stay with qualified lawyers.
