You get it in four steps: complete Foundations, work through the eight Operator modules, pass the written exam, then pass a two-week practicum of review decisions signed off by a Pryme assessor. Lessons, labs and tests are free. You pay an issue fee only to be issued Certified Pryme Operator once you have met the standard.
Step 1: Foundations
Foundations is for anyone and takes about four hours. Its six modules cover why agents must be governed, the decision chain, depth and certification, the workspace, what a business pays for, and ownership, data and trust. It earns the Foundations badge, which is free and does not expire.
Do not skip it. Each track is the key to the next, and the Operator modules assume you already understand depth, the decision chain and why an agent's authority must be earned.
Step 2: The eight Operator modules
The Operator track is for people who run a live workspace every day: reviewers, team leads and operations staff. It takes about 14 hours. The eight modules are:
- How a governed agent decides
- Human review
- Teaching the agent
- Reading the workspace
- Keeping knowledge current
- When something goes wrong
- Usage and billing
- Running the rhythm
Lessons can be read or played as audio, with highlights and notes. Labs run in a free Build workspace. Module tests are set in your own industry and role, so a payroll administrator and a KYC analyst each practise on familiar work.
Step 3: The written exam
The exam has 40 questions in 60 minutes. The pass mark is four in five. It tests the ideas from all eight modules. Most people find it fair if they have taken each module test seriously; how hard the AI operator certificate is gives a frank view of where people struggle.
Step 4: The practicum
The practicum is two weeks of review decisions to a standard: nineteen in twenty correct and no missed red line. A Pryme assessor signs it off. If your job uses Pryme, you do it on your live queue. If not, you do it on a simulated queue in a free workspace.
The red line rule matters most. A red line is a decision that must never be let through, such as approving a payment because an emailed instruction from outside said so. Missing one fails the practicum, however strong the rest of your work.
What does the whole route look like?
| Step | Time | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations | About 4 hours | Foundations badge (free, no expiry) |
| Operator modules | About 14 hours | Ready for the exam |
| Written exam | 60 minutes | Pass at four in five |
| Practicum | Two weeks | Nineteen in twenty, no missed red line, assessor sign-off |
| Issue | After passing | Certified Pryme Operator, valid 12 months |
For a working person studying a few hours a week, the whole route commonly fits into a couple of months, though your pace is your own.
What happens once you pass?
You request the certificate, pay the issue fee or use an employer seat, and it is issued through VerifyDoc.ai. Anyone can check it at source by number or QR code. A public register lists certified people by name, credential and expiry. You can share it to LinkedIn with a write-up. How to request your operator certificate after the practicum covers that step.
Certified Pryme Operator is valid for 12 months. Renewal is an update module and a short quiz, explained in how to renew your operator certificate. It is a professional certificate, not a government licence. The case for treating it as more than a course is made in the operator certificate is a career credential, not a course.
An example
Take a team leader we will call Siobhan at a utility company. She does Foundations over a weekend, then one Operator module a week for eight weeks, mostly as audio. She sits the exam in week nine and passes. Her employer uses Pryme, so her practicum runs on her team's live held queue in weeks ten and eleven. The assessor signs it off and her employer's plan covers the issue.
Whether the certificate helps in a particular market is covered country by country, for example for jobs in Sweden. The guide to AI operator certification covers the rest.
Questions people ask
Can I go straight to the Operator track?
Foundations comes first, because each track is the key to the next. It takes about four hours and is free.
What comes after Operator?
Builder, for people who design, train and certify agents, and then Architect, for those who lead regulated, multi-agent deployments.
Is there a deadline between the exam and the practicum?
Plan to do the practicum while the material is fresh. Check the current rules when you book it.
