How KYC analysts can complete the operator practicum

How KYC analysts complete the operator practicum in retail banking: onboarding files, screening hits and risk ratings, each decided with a clear reason.

KYC analysts complete the operator practicum by reviewing a retail bank onboarding agent's held work for two weeks: identity checks, screening hits, risk ratings and periodic reviews. You decide each item and record why. Passing takes nineteen correct decisions in every twenty and no missed red line, confirmed by a Pryme assessor.

Why is KYC a natural fit for the practicum?

Customer due diligence is already a review discipline. You check identity against evidence, weigh risk, and escalate what does not fit. An onboarding agent can gather the documents, run the screening, draft the risk rating and chase what is missing. What it cannot do is own the decision to bring a customer in. That stays with you, and the practicum measures how well you hold it.

The practicum is half of Certified Pryme Operator, with the written exam as the other half. If your bank uses Pryme you work its live onboarding queue; if not, you work a simulated queue in a free workspace, as explained in can you do the operator practicum without a job. For the general format, read what the operator practicum is.

What will the onboarding queue contain?

  • New personal account applications with the agent's draft identity verification.
  • Screening results: possible sanctions matches, politically exposed person hits and adverse media.
  • Draft customer risk ratings with the factors behind them.
  • Source of funds explanations for larger initial deposits.
  • Periodic review refreshes where documents have expired or circumstances changed.
  • Document requests the agent wants to send to the customer.

Provenance runs through every file. Data from the bank's own core system is sealed. A document verified with its issuer is signed. The customer's answers on the application form are declared. A scan of a utility bill uploaded through a link in an email is external until verified.

The steps through each file

  1. Agent, depth 1: assembles the file with documents, screening results and history.
  2. Agent, depth 3: sends routine document requests within bounds, from approved templates.
  3. Agent, depth 2: drafts the verification outcome and risk rating, naming the factors, and holds it.
  4. You: review screening hits first, then identity, then risk factors.
  5. You: decide. Approve onboarding, request more, decline, or escalate to a senior or the compliance team.
  6. You: write the reason, naming the evidence and its provenance.
  7. Senior or compliance: acts on escalations, including true positive screening matches and suspicion reporting.
  8. Agent, depth 1: files the decision in the append-only record for the assessor.
Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Gather documents Collects and indexes 1 Spotting a missing or altered document
Request documents Sends from approved templates 3 Unusual requests
Screening hit Presents the match and data 1 Discounting or escalating it
Risk rating Drafts with factors, holds 2 Agreeing or changing the rating
Open the account Prepares and holds 3, held The analyst's decision

Which red lines must you never miss?

  • Approving a customer with an unresolved possible sanctions match.
  • Discounting a PEP hit without the checks your procedure requires, or without escalating it.
  • Accepting an external document as verified identity or address evidence without the verification step.
  • Approving where the name, date of birth or address conflict across documents.
  • Telling a customer, through a drafted message, that they are under suspicion. A request for more information must never reveal a concern.

Each of these is a single-miss fail, whatever your other numbers show.

How do you write KYC reasons that an assessor trusts?

Lead with the hit, then the evidence, then the call. "Possible PEP match on name only; date of birth differs by 30 years (sealed core data and signed ID); discounted with reason recorded" is complete. "False positive" is not, because it does not show what you checked. The same reasoning helps in the debrief: assessors compare your reasons with the procedure, not just your outcome.

A practicum log template for KYC analysts gives you a parallel record to keep.

Which controls stand behind the decisions?

  • Held onboarding decisions. No account opens on the agent's draft alone. Evidence: your name on each approval.
  • Screening escalation. Possible matches go to a named person. Evidence: the escalation entry.
  • Provenance. Evidence: the class of each document you relied on.
  • Append-only record. Evidence: a file a supervisor can reconstruct years later, which risk-based due diligence under the FATF Recommendations expects.

What should you measure?

Decisions correct over total, by item type. Screening hits discounted versus escalated, against the senior's view. Time per file, so you can show you were thorough without being slow. And how often you rejected the agent's risk rating: that number tells you, and later an interviewer, where the agent is weak.

Where does it usually go wrong for KYC analysts?

Clearing hits on autopilot. Most screening matches are false positives, and the fortnight can lull you. The one real hit is a red line.

Over-escalating to stay safe. Sending every PEP hit to compliance when your procedure lets you discount clear mismatches counts as a wrong decision. Compliance analysts and business analysts face the same balance on different files in how compliance analysts complete the practicum and how business analysts complete it.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy runs the practicum to the same standard on live and simulated queues, and the Operator modules on human review and when something goes wrong are the direct preparation. The resulting certificate is checkable through VerifyDoc.ai. The AI operator certification guide explains what it tells an employer.

Questions people ask

Does the practicum replace my bank's KYC training?

No. It shows you can review a governed agent's work to a standard. Your bank's own procedures still govern what you approve.

What if my senior and I disagree on a risk rating?

Log your reason and let the senior decide. A well-reasoned decision can still be judged sound even where the rating differs.

Can I complete it on a simulated queue if I am between roles?

Yes. People without a job that uses Pryme work a simulated queue in a free workspace, to the same standard and sign-off.
