If you study around branch shifts, plan on eight to ten weeks. That covers about four hours of Foundations, about fourteen hours of Operator lessons and labs, a written exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes, and a two-week practicum of scored review decisions. Tellers who can protect three hours a week finish nearer eight.
What decides the pace for a teller?
Shifts decide it. Counter work runs in fixed hours with no quiet desk time, so learning happens outside them. Lessons can be read or listened to as audio, with highlights and notes, which suits a commute or a lunch break. The labs need a screen and some focus, so plan them for a day off.
The second factor is where the practicum happens. If your bank runs Pryme and gives you a seat, the two weeks take place on a live review queue. If it does not, you do them on a simulated queue in a free workspace, which you can fit around your rota rather than your manager's.
A realistic week-by-week plan
| Weeks | What you do | Time it takes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Foundations: six short modules | About 4 hours |
| 2 to 6 | Operator: eight modules with labs | About 14 hours, roughly 3 a week |
| 6 | Written exam: 40 questions in 60 minutes, pass mark four in five | 1 hour, plus revision |
| 7 to 8 | Practicum: two weeks of review decisions | Spread across normal days |
| 9 | Assessor sign-off and issue of the certificate | Waiting time only |
If a week of holiday cover or a branch audit lands in the middle, add a week. That is why the honest range is eight to ten, not six.
What will you be reviewing, and what stays with you?
In retail banking an agent might read account histories at depth 1, draft replies about fees or card replacements at depth 2, and, where it has earned depth 3, complete routine changes such as a new contact address within the bank's own limits. Moving money is depth 4, and banks usually hold it for a person.
Your counter instincts transfer directly. These stay with a person:
- A withdrawal or transfer where the customer may be under pressure or being scammed.
- Any change requested by someone other than the account holder.
- Waiving a fee above the bank's limit for the agent.
- A customer who seems confused, distressed or vulnerable.
- Anything held because the source was only declared by a caller, not sealed by the core ledger.
The exam tests whether you can read why the agent stopped. "Held: customer limit" and "Held: sources" need different responses, and tellers who learn the difference early find the practicum calmer.
An example: a teller we will call Dami
Dami works four days a week at a building society branch. She listens to the Foundations lessons on the bus over one week, then does Operator labs on Wednesday evenings and on her Saturday off, about three hours a week, finishing the modules in five weeks. She sits the exam in week six and passes.
Her branch does not use Pryme, so she runs the practicum on a simulated queue. On day three she meets a held request to change a phone number that arrived by email rather than through the customer's verified channel. She keeps it held and asks for verification, which is the right call: an external message cannot authorise a change to how the bank reaches its customer. Her whole route takes nine weeks.
Why can it not be done in a weekend?
The parts that slow you down are the parts that make the certificate worth checking. The exam has a real pass mark. The practicum is scored decision by decision, needs nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, and is signed off by a Pryme assessor. One missed red line fails it, so rushing saves nothing.
Other roles move at different speeds. Compare how long it takes a collections agent or a KYC analyst's timeline, both of which start closer to review work. Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's lessons, labs and tests are free, and every lab runs in a free Build workspace, so you can start before your bank does anything. Module tests are set in retail banking and in your role. The Foundations badge is free; Certified Pryme Operator carries an issue fee, paid to be issued the certificate, never to pass. It is valid for 12 months.
Questions people ask
Do I need my bank's permission to start?
No. The lessons, labs and simulated practicum run in your own free workspace. You only need your employer if you want the practicum on its live queue.
Is this a banking qualification?
No. It is a professional certificate that shows you can oversee governed AI agents, not a regulatory qualification or a government licence. It sits alongside whatever your bank already requires of you.
Can an employer check it quickly?
Yes. The certificate is issued through VerifyDoc.ai and can be checked at source by number or QR code. A lapsed certificate shows as lapsed on the same page.
