A KYC analyst in retail banking should allow roughly six weeks. Foundations takes about four hours and Operator about fourteen, which most analysts finish in four weeks. Then comes a 60-minute written exam and a two-week practicum. Few roles map so closely onto the practicum: you already decide whether evidence is good enough to proceed.
Why does KYC work translate so directly?
Because KYC is a provenance discipline. You check where each document came from, who stands behind it, and whether it matches what the customer declared. The Pryme Context Protocol uses the same logic, in four classes, strongest first: sealed (from the system of record, tamper-evident), signed (a named, identifiable party answers for it), declared (stated by the customer, unverified) and external (arrived from outside, such as an emailed document or a web page).
A KYC analyst sees immediately why a customer's declared address cannot outrank a signed confirmation from a verified issuer. The Operator modules give you the words for what you already do, and the workspace shows the agent's reasoning in those terms.
What does an onboarding agent do, and what stays with you?
- Depth 1: reads the application, identity documents and screening results.
- Depth 2: drafts a customer risk rating and a request for missing documents. A person sends it.
- Depth 3: where certified, completes low-risk onboarding when every check clears within the bank's limits.
- Held or refused: anything with an unresolved screening hit, a document mismatch, or a source that is only declared where the bank requires it to be signed.
What stays with you:
- Clearing or confirming a sanctions or politically exposed person match.
- Accepting a document the agent could not verify.
- Enhanced due diligence decisions and higher risk ratings.
- Any decision to refuse or exit a customer.
- Anything that could lead to a suspicious activity report.
These follow the risk-based approach set out in the FATF Recommendations, which shape AML and customer due diligence rules in most markets.
A six-week plan
| Weeks | Step | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Foundations | About 4 hours |
| 1 to 4 | Operator modules and labs | About 14 hours, at four or five a week |
| 4 | Written exam | 40 questions, 60 minutes, pass mark four in five |
| 5 to 6 | Practicum | Nineteen in twenty correct, no missed red line |
| End of 6 | Sign-off | A Pryme assessor reviews your decisions |
If your bank uses Pryme, the practicum runs on its onboarding or periodic review queue. If not, take it on a simulated queue in a free workspace with KYC cases.
An example: an analyst we will call Mads
Mads handles onboarding and periodic reviews at a retail bank in Copenhagen. He completes the learning in four weeks, studying on Monday and Thursday evenings, and passes the exam.
His bank runs a pilot onboarding agent, so the practicum is live. On day one he approves six low-risk applications the agent held only because a postcode format failed a check. On day seven he holds an application where the agent rated risk as low, but the proof of address is a utility bill sent as an email attachment, and the name on it differs by one letter from the passport. External source, mismatch: held for a request. He is certified in six weeks.
Where does the certificate sit in a KYC career?
Alongside your AML knowledge, not instead of it. The certificate shows you can run a governed agent's queue, and anyone can check it at source by number or QR code. Your name, credential and expiry appear on the register of certified people. It is valid for 12 months.
Compare a compliance analyst's timeline and a fraud analyst's timeline. For local detail, read getting operator certified while working in Denmark or in Switzerland. The guide to AI operator certification explains the credential.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's module tests are set in retail banking and in the KYC role, so the cases match your queue. Lessons, labs and tests are free, and you can listen to lessons as audio between reviews. Certified Pryme Operator carries an issue fee, paid to be issued it, never to pass, and is issued through VerifyDoc.ai.
Questions people ask
Does it replace an AML qualification?
No. It shows you can oversee governed agents in KYC work. Professional AML qualifications cover the law and practice of financial crime, which the Operator track does not.
Do I need my bank to use Pryme?
No. The simulated queue in a free workspace lets you complete the practicum to the same standard. A live queue simply fits the practicum into paid hours.
What happens when the certificate lapses?
It shows as lapsed on its verification page. You renew it with an update module and a short quiz.
