AI operator certification·Answer

How long does it take a paralegal to get AI agent certified?

A paralegal can reach Certified Pryme Operator in six to seven weeks. The practicum rewards the habit of checking every claim against its source.

Six to seven weeks suits most paralegals. Foundations takes about four hours and the Operator modules and labs about fourteen. Then you sit a written exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes and complete a two-week practicum. Paralegals tend to do well because the core review skill, checking every claim against its source, is already their daily work.

Why do paralegals adapt quickly?

Legal work runs on sources. A chronology is only as good as the documents behind each entry, and a due diligence report fails if one finding cannot be traced. Governed agents are judged the same way. One of the seven gates in Attest, the certification Pryme uses for agents, is grounded: whether each answer rests on a real source. As a reviewer you check the same thing case by case.

The workspace also shows where each fact came from. A sealed record from the firm's own matter system outranks a signed statement from an identified party, which outranks a client's declared account, which outranks something that arrived from outside. Paralegals already rank evidence like this.

What does the agent do in legal support work?

  • Depth 1: reads disclosure documents, contracts, correspondence and the matter file.
  • Depth 2: drafts a chronology, a document summary, a due diligence table or a first-pass review tag. A person checks and owns it.
  • Depth 3: where certified, tags documents for relevance within the protocol the case team set, or files correspondence to the right matter.
  • Never alone: anything sent to a court, a client or the other side.

What stays with you or the supervising lawyer:

  1. Privilege calls on any document.
  2. Anything that could amount to legal advice.
  3. Conclusions in a due diligence report.
  4. Any deadline or date that matters to the case.

A red line here might be a summary that states a fact the source document does not contain, or a draft that mixes two clients' matters.

A six-to-seven-week plan

Weeks Step Notes
1 Foundations About 4 hours
2 to 5 Operator modules and labs About 14 hours
5 Written exam Pass mark four in five
6 to 7 Practicum Nineteen in twenty correct, no missed red line
End of 7 Sign-off A Pryme assessor reviews your decisions

A disclosure deadline can swallow a fortnight, so place the practicum after one, not across it. If your firm uses Pryme, the practicum runs on its queue; if not, use a simulated queue in a free workspace set in legal services.

An example: a paralegal we will call Ingrid

Ingrid works in a commercial disputes team in Gothenburg. She finishes the modules in four weeks, studying three evenings a week, and passes the exam. Her firm is not on Pryme, so she takes the simulated practicum.

On day two she rejects a drafted chronology entry stating a meeting took place on a date that appears only in an unsigned note. On day six she approves a batch of relevance tags the agent held because a new search term had been added to the protocol and the tags matched it. She is certified in seven weeks.

What does the certificate add?

Evidence that you can oversee agents doing legal support work, checkable at source by number or QR code. It is issued through VerifyDoc.ai, sits on the register of certified people and is valid for 12 months.

Questions people ask

Is this a legal qualification?

No. It is a professional certificate showing you can oversee governed agents. It does not entitle you to give legal advice or replace any legal qualification.

Can a lawyer take the same route?

Yes. Operator is for anyone who runs a live workspace every day. Lawyers who supervise agent work often take it.

How is it renewed?

With an update module and a short quiz after 12 months. Until you renew, it shows as lapsed.
