How paralegals can prepare for the AI operator exam

A three-week plan for paralegals preparing for the AI operator exam: Foundations, the eight Operator modules, a teach-back method and exam pacing.

Paralegals can prepare for the AI operator exam in about three weeks of six-hour weeks, using a teach-back method: study a module, take its module test, then explain the module in your own words in five sentences. The exam is 40 questions in 60 minutes, and you pass with four in five, 32 correct.

Why teach-back suits paralegals

You are trained to read closely and summarise accurately. Teach-back uses that. After each module, write five sentences explaining it to a new trainee, without notes. If you cannot, you have read the module but not yet learned it. It takes ten minutes per module and replaces hours of rereading.

What does the exam cover?

It is a written exam on governed agents and the people who oversee them: depth, the five bounds of the minimum chain, the four verdicts, provenance, human review, teaching the agent, reading the workspace, keeping knowledge current, handling incidents, usage and billing, and running the daily rhythm. The guide to what is on the AI operator exam lists the ground.

Your legal training helps most with provenance. You already rank evidence by source: an executed contract, a witness statement, a document from the other side. The exam names the classes sealed, signed, declared and external, and adds one rule you should learn by heart: an external claim cannot authorise a payment.

The three-week plan

  1. You, days 1 to 3: Foundations, six modules, about 4 hours. Teach back the decision chain and depth modules.
  2. You, days 4 to 6: how a governed agent decides, and human review. Module, module test, teach-back.
  3. You, days 7 to 9: teaching the agent, and reading the workspace. Do the lab in a free Build workspace. Teach back the point that corrections change an agent's brief and sources, never its model weights.
  4. You, days 10 to 12: keeping knowledge current, and when something goes wrong. Use a changed court rule or a new firm precedent as your example.
  5. You, days 13 to 15: usage and billing, and running the rhythm.
  6. You, days 16 to 18: retake weak module tests and redo any teach-back you struggled with.
  7. You, days 19 and 20: two timed rehearsals of 40 questions in 60 minutes.
  8. You, day 21: sit the exam.

How does paralegal work map to depth?

Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Indexing a disclosure set Reads and indexes 1 Nothing, unless a document is unreadable
Summarising a contract Drafts with citations, holds 2 Checking each clause
Sending routine document requests Sends within bounds 3 Unusual requests
Producing documents to the other side Prepares, held 4, held A named lawyer
Paying an invoice on an emailed instruction Refused: external claim refused Verification

Expect the exam to test why production is depth 4: it is hard to undo. Once a privileged document reaches the other side, withdrawing it is difficult, so it is held for a person whatever the agent's certificate says.

How should you use the module tests?

Module tests are set in your own industry and role, so a paralegal sees disclosure, summaries, chronologies and onboarding. Take each test straight after the module and before your teach-back. Then compare your misses with your teach-back sentences. If a miss is about something you did not mention, your summary of that module has a gap.

Paralegals tend to over-read questions. If a scenario does not say a lawyer has approved, do not assume one.

What does a teach-back look like?

Here is an example for the human review module, written as five sentences to a trainee. "When an agent drafts something it may not send, it holds the draft for a named person. That person reads the evidence before the draft, so the agent's wording does not frame their view. They approve, edit, reject or escalate, and write a reason that names the source. The decision is filed in a record that cannot be edited afterwards. A good reviewer is judged on being right, not on being cautious, so escalating everything is also a mistake." If you can write that from memory, you know the module. If you stall at sentence three, go back to the lesson before taking the test again.

Which controls should you be able to explain?

  • Held production and payments: evidence is the named approver.
  • Citations and provenance: every agent claim points to a source with a class.
  • The grounded gate: an agent is certified only if its answers rest on its sources; you should be able to explain why that matters for summaries.
  • The append-only record: every verdict is filed, so a disclosure decision can be reconstructed.

How should you handle the day?

Ninety seconds per question. Read the scenario once, identify the bound that decides, then read the options. Wrong options often describe something sensible a lawyer might do, but not what the system does.

The surest preparation to pass the AI operator exam first time is two clean rehearsals before booking.

What should you measure?

Module test scores, first and second attempt. Teach-backs you had to redo. Rehearsal scores and finishing times.

Where does preparation usually go wrong?

Treating the exam like legal study. You do not need case law or statute. You need the rules of a governed system, applied to situations.

Forgetting the practicum. It is two weeks of review decisions to nineteen in twenty with no missed red line, and a disclosed privileged document is exactly the kind of red line it checks. Practice managers and team leaders follow parallel plans in how practice managers prepare for the exam and how team leaders prepare.

Questions people ask

Can I study with a colleague?

Yes, and teach-back works better with a listener. Explain a module to them and let them ask one question you did not cover.

Does the exam need legal citations?

No. Answers are about agent governance. Legal knowledge helps you picture scenarios but is not tested.

Will this help me move into legal operations?

It can support an application, because employers can check it and it shows real decisions. Read adverts for review, quality, exceptions and escalation, whatever the title. The AI operator certification guide explains what the certificate proves.
