Yes. Any business that lets an AI agent draft or act on its behalf needs named people to decide the items the agent holds, check a sample of what it completed, and report what keeps going wrong. That work is real, paid and accountable. It rarely carries the title "AI agent reviewer", which is why people doubt it exists.
Why do businesses need agent reviewers?
A business answers for what its agents do. If an agent refunds the wrong customer, sends personal data to the wrong address or approves a loan it should have declined, the business carries the consequence. So well-run businesses set bounds: the agent may act on routine work within limits, and anything outside them is held for a person.
Regulation reinforces this in some areas. GDPR Article 22 restricts decisions based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects on people; a meaningful human review is one way businesses stay within it. GDPR Article 22 and the human reviewer's job explains that link. The EU AI Act sets human oversight duties for high-risk systems in Article 14. In both cases the review must be real: a person who rubber-stamps every item is not oversight.

How does the job show up in adverts?
Under other names. Employers title roles after the business work: claims referrals handler, payments exceptions analyst, quality assurance specialist, case reviewer, complaints quality analyst, credit operations specialist. The agent may be mentioned once in the duties as "automated processing" or "digital tools", or not at all.
Signs an advert is really an agent reviewer role:
- Duties include reviewing, approving or rejecting items flagged by a system.
- It mentions authority limits or approval rights.
- It mentions quality sampling of automated decisions.
- It asks for root cause analysis or reporting recurring issues.
- It values domain experience in claims, credit, payments or service over technical skills.
How is it different from rating AI outputs online?
There is a separate, much-advertised kind of work where people rate or correct the outputs of general AI models, often as freelance tasks. That helps model providers train their models. An agent reviewer works inside one business, decides real items for real customers, and answers for those decisions. The first is task work; the second is an operational role with accountability, domain knowledge and usually a place in a team.
Is there a career beyond it?
Yes. Reviewers build the judgement that quality, analyst and lead roles need. Some move to AI quality reviewer or operations analyst; some become the lead who runs reviewers and agents together. Take an invented example of the path. A claims handler we will call Joel, at a regional insurer, began by clearing held claims two days a week. A year on, he wrote the review standard his team uses, trained four new reviewers and reported weekly to the head of claims on what the agent held and why. His title changed twice. The work was real from the first day.

How do I show I can do the job?

Is it entry-level?
Sometimes. Most reviewers come from the work the agent supports, because domain knowledge is what lets them judge it. A graduate with a practicum record can start on simpler queues.
Will the job disappear as agents improve?
Better agents may hold fewer items, but businesses still answer for decisions with lasting effects, and someone must check completed work and own the limits. The volume may change; the need for a named, accountable person does not go away.
