AI agent jobs and careers·Answer

What does an AI agent reviewer do?

An AI agent reviewer decides the cases an agent holds, records a reason for each and flags patterns. What the day looks like, the skills and how to get in.

AI agent reviewers decide the cases an AI agent cannot settle on its own. The agent drafts the work and holds it; the reviewer checks the sources, approves, changes or declines it, and records a short reason. Reviewers also flag patterns, such as the agent holding the same kind of case too often, so it can be improved.

What lands in a reviewer's queue?

A governed agent returns one of four verdicts on every action: allowed, held, refused or withheld. Held means the agent has done the work and is waiting for a named person. That is the reviewer's queue.

Items are held for a reason the verdict names. Typical ones:

  • Over a limit: a refund, credit or payment above what the business lets the agent do alone.
  • Conflicting evidence: two sources disagree, or a key fact is only declared by the customer.
  • Policy exceptions: the case falls outside the rules the agent knows.
  • Sensitive situations: a vulnerable customer, a complaint, a possible fraud.
  • Red lines: cases the business says a person must always see.

What does a reviewer actually do with each item?

  1. Read the draft and the reason it was held.
  2. Check the sources. Each fact is labelled by provenance: sealed (from the system of record), signed (a named party answers for it), declared (stated by a person, unverified) or external (from outside, such as an email). An external claim cannot authorise a payment.
  3. Decide: approve, change, decline or escalate.
  4. Write a reason in one or two sentences, naming the evidence and the rule.
  5. Flag patterns to the agent owner or analyst when the same issue keeps appearing.

Every decision is filed in an append-only record, so it can be reconstructed later.

What does a day look like?

Take a reviewer we will call Tom at a mid-sized online retailer. He starts with about sixty held refunds. Most take a minute: the amount is over the limit, the evidence is clear, he approves. One customer has claimed "never arrived" three times in a month; he declines the instant refund and asks for an investigation. Another involves a customer who mentions a bereavement; he approves goodwill above the usual amount and records why.

After lunch, Tom notices the agent holds every refund for a particular courier because its tracking data arrives late. He tells the agent owner, who asks the builder to adjust the source. By the end of the day, his decisions are in the record, and his reasons will be read when the agent is next improved.

Who does a reviewer work with?

  • The agent owner, who answers for the agent and acts on patterns.
  • Builders, who change the agent's brief, sources and bounds.
  • AI operations analysts, who read the record across many reviewers.
  • Team leads, who sample reviewers' decisions for quality.

What skills does the job need?

  • Judgement on cases that point two ways.
  • Source sense: knowing which evidence is strong and which is not.
  • Clear writing: short, specific reasons.
  • Discipline on red lines: escalating even when a case looks fine.
  • Domain knowledge of the work: claims, refunds, KYC, payroll, whatever the agent does.

Speed matters, but after accuracy. Job titles vary: "case reviewer", "quality analyst", "exceptions handler", "decision reviewer". Read the duties.

How do people get into reviewing?

Most come from the job the agent does: customer service, claims, KYC, collections, bookkeeping. How to become an AI agent reviewer sets out the route, what an AI agent reviewer is defines the role, and the AI agent reviewer CV template helps you present it. There is a market-specific route for becoming an AI agent reviewer in Australia. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers shows where reviewing leads.

Questions people ask

Is reviewing just rubber-stamping?

No. Held items are held because they are not routine. A reviewer who approves everything adds no value and teaches the agent bad habits.

Can reviewing be done remotely?

Often, yes, because the work happens in a workspace. Employers set their own policies, especially for sensitive data.

Where does a reviewer go next?

Common next steps are AI operations analyst, agent owner and builder. Each builds on the reviewer's knowledge of where agents go wrong.
