Yes. Teaching is a relationship with a class, and agents do not stand in front of thirty pupils. Agents can draft lesson materials, mark multiple-choice quizzes, summarise progress data and write routine letters home. Teaching, behaviour, pastoral care, safeguarding and final grades stay with a teacher. What changes is how much of your evening goes on administration.
What can an agent take from a teacher's workload?
The work that agents handle well is the work most teachers would happily lose:
- Lesson resource drafts: worksheets, reading questions, differentiated versions of a text, at depth 2, for you to check.
- Marking objective questions such as quizzes and spelling tests, at depth 1 or 3, with results for you to review.
- Progress summaries from the school's assessment data.
- Routine letters and emails to parents about trips, deadlines or kit, held for you to send.
- Report comment drafts from your notes, which you edit into your own voice.
That is real time back. It does not change who teaches.
What stays with a teacher, and why?
| Work | Why it stays with a person |
|---|---|
| Teaching and explaining | It responds to the faces in front of you |
| Behaviour and relationships | Authority and trust are human |
| Safeguarding | Spotting and reporting concerns is a duty that needs a trained person |
| Grading extended writing and final grades | A judgement about a child's work that affects their future |
| Conversations with parents about difficulties | Need tact and accountability |
An agent should never be the one deciding a grade that matters, or noticing a safeguarding concern and doing nothing. Schools that use agents well hold anything affecting a pupil's record for a teacher.
What does a week look like with a teaching agent?
Take a secondary history teacher we will call Joanna. On Sunday evening she asks the agent for a source-analysis worksheet on the causes of the First World War, in three reading levels. It drafts them in minutes. She finds one source is misattributed and one question gives away the answer, so she fixes both.
On Wednesday the agent marks a twenty-question quiz and summarises which topics the class struggled with. Joanna sees most pupils confused two treaties and reteaches that point. A pupil's written answer includes a worrying comment about home. The agent's rules route it straight to Joanna rather than marking it. She follows the school's safeguarding procedure. The agent saved her hours. The judgement remained hers.
Which controls make classroom agents safe?
- Pupil data kept to what each task needs, under the school's data protection rules. In the EU and UK, GDPR and UK GDPR apply.
- Held verdicts for anything sent to parents or recorded as a grade.
- Hard routing of any possible safeguarding concern to a person.
- Labelled sources: the curriculum and the school's own materials are the reference; a web page is external and must be checked.
- A filed record of what the agent drafted and what you approved.
Some public uses of AI are classed as high-risk under the EU AI Act, and public bodies face extra transparency and fairness duties, so state schools in particular should expect clear rules.
Which skills make a teacher harder to replace?
None of your core skills is under threat. What helps is learning to check an agent's output fast: accuracy, level and bias. It also helps to understand how schools set rules for agents, because someone in each school will own that.
Some teachers want to use these skills outside teaching. How a teacher can move into AI operations covers the options, and moving from teacher to AI agent reviewer explains why marking and feedback habits suit reviewing. If you want to stay, volunteering for an AI agent pilot as a teacher helps shape your school's approach. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers sets the wider context.
Where the Academy fits
If you are staying in teaching, Pryme Intelligence Academy's free Foundations track is probably enough: about four hours on why agents must be governed and how data and trust work, with lessons you can listen to as audio. If you are leaving teaching for operations work, the Operator track trains daily review of an agent's decisions and ends in a professional certificate employers can check.
Questions people ask
Will schools need fewer teachers?
Class teaching needs a teacher in the room, and agents do not change that. They may change support roles and administration. Nobody can promise staffing decisions, which depend on budgets.
Is it acceptable to use an agent for report comments?
Many schools allow drafts if the teacher edits them and stands behind the final words. Check your school's policy, and never let a generic comment go out unread.
Do teaching skills transfer to agent work?
Yes. Marking against a standard, giving a reason and spotting a pattern of errors are exactly what reviewing an agent involves.
