Why does a reminder matter for such a small task?
Because the cost of a lapse is out of proportion to the effort of renewing. A lapsed certificate shows as lapsed on the same verification page an employer checks. If your employer ties approval rights to a current certificate, a lapse can take you off a review rota overnight. If you are job hunting, a recruiter who checks the page sees "lapsed" next to your name.

How do you fill in the template?
Take the expiry date from your verification page, not from memory or the PDF. Count back to set each reminder. Leave enough time before expiry for a busy month: if your work has a peak season, plan to finish renewal before it starts.
Put the reminders where you actually look: your work calendar, your phone, or both. If your employer tracks certificates, send your manager or team lead the expiry date too, so the reminder does not depend on you alone. The idea of a renewal window is useful here: the period in which renewing is possible and sensible, which you should check with the issuer.

What should you check after renewing?
Three things. First, the verification page: the expiry should now be a year further out, and the status current. Second, anywhere you have quoted the old expiry, such as your CV or LinkedIn. Third, your employer's records if they keep one. A renewed certificate that your employer's tracker still shows as expiring is a problem waiting to happen.
If you hold several certificates, keep them in one list, with each expiry date. Builder certificates also run for 12 months, Architect certificates for 24, so the dates drift apart.
