Insurers that put governed agents to work need claims reviewers, underwriting referral reviewers, complaints reviewers, AI operations analysts, agent owners and governance staff. Agents gather evidence and draft decisions; people decide anything that pays out above a limit, refuses cover or affects a vulnerable customer. Claims handlers and underwriters are the natural recruits.
What do agents do at an insurer?
Insurance runs on documents and rules, which suits agents:
- First notice of loss: taking the claim details, checking the policy is live and the event is covered, at depth 1 and 2.
- Evidence gathering: photos, repair estimates, police references, medical reports.
- Settling small, clear claims within limits the insurer sets, at depth 3 or, for payment, depth 4 where permitted.
- Underwriting referrals: pre-filling a risk summary for cases outside the automatic rules.
- Complaint drafts and policy queries.
Which jobs exist around insurance agents?
| Job | What it involves | Who fits |
|---|---|---|
| Claims reviewer | Decides held claims (conflicting evidence, possible fraud, vulnerable customer) and pays those above the limit | Claims handlers |
| Underwriting referral reviewer | Reviews risks the agent cannot price within the rules | Underwriting assistants, underwriters |
| Complaints reviewer | Checks drafted responses for fairness and accuracy | Complaints handlers |
| AI operations analyst | Reads the record, measures overturned decisions, proposes rule changes | Claims or pricing analysts |
| AI agent owner | Answers for an agent's scope, sources, limits and certification | Claims managers, underwriting managers |
| Governance and compliance | Checks agents against conduct, data and model rules | Compliance officers, risk managers |
Why does insurance need these roles?
Insurance decisions touch money and people at difficult moments. Under the EU AI Act, risk assessment and pricing for life and health insurance are listed as high-risk in Annex III. In the UK, the FCA's Consumer Duty expects good outcomes for retail customers, and US insurers answer to state insurance regulators, coordinated through the NAIC. Wherever you are, someone must be able to explain why a claim was paid or refused.
A governed agent holds what it cannot settle within its bounds, and a person decides. The verdict names which bound stopped it: the insurer's own limit, the agent's certificate or its role scope.
What does a claims reviewer decide?
Take a reviewer we will call Connor at a home insurer. A customer claims for water damage after a burst pipe. The agent has the policy (sealed, from the policy system), a plumber's invoice uploaded by the customer (declared), and a contractor's estimate emailed in (external). The estimate is above the agent's settlement limit, so it holds the claim.
Connor sees the plumber's invoice is dated before the reported date of loss. He calls the customer, who explains the leak had been dripping for weeks before the pipe burst. That raises a gradual damage question under the policy wording. Connor decides cover for the sudden burst, declines the earlier damage, writes a clear reason, and checks the customer understands. The record shows each step.
How do you get into these jobs?
Claims handlers, underwriting assistants and complaints staff already know the policy wordings, which agents depend on. Look for adverts mentioning "referrals", "quality assurance", "technical review" or "exceptions". The new AI operations jobs in insurance describes the roles in depth, and market detail is in AI operations jobs in insurance in Australia and in Singapore. AI agent jobs in logistics shows a sector with similar claims work, and the guide to AI agent jobs and careers covers the rest.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track fits claims and referral reviewers: eight modules including human review and what to do when something goes wrong, then a written exam and a two-week practicum. Agent owners who design and certify agents look at Builder. Anyone leading regulated, multi-agent deployments can aim for Architect, which carries a board review with two assessors.
Questions people ask
Will insurers still hire claims handlers?
They will still need people for complex claims and review, though perhaps fewer for simple first notice of loss. Nobody can promise numbers. Handlers who build review skills are better placed.
Is fraud work part of these jobs?
Often. Agents flag patterns across claims; reviewers and specialist investigators decide what they mean. Flagging is not deciding, and the record keeps them apart.
Can an agent refuse a claim?
That depends on the insurer's limits and the market. Many insurers keep refusals with a person, because the customer is owed a clear reason and a route to complain.
