AI skills for job seekers·Answer

What AI skills should a legal secretary learn to stay employable?

Legal secretaries stay employable by learning to check AI-drafted letters and deadlines against the source and hold anything that leaves the firm.

Accuracy at the point work leaves the firm is the skill to build. As AI agents transcribe dictation, draft routine letters and track dates, a legal secretary stays employable by checking every deadline against its source document, catching errors before they reach a client or court, and holding anything hard to take back.

What will agents do in a law firm's support team?

A large share of a legal secretary's day is production work: typing dictation, formatting letters and documents, filing emails to matters, building bundles, entering dates in the diary and chasing clients for signatures. Agents can do much of this quickly. They draft letters from templates, file correspondence by matter number and suggest diary entries from incoming documents.

What they handle badly is anything where a small error has a large cost. A wrong party name in a letter before action. A deadline calculated from the wrong date. A privileged document attached to an email to the other side. A secretary who catches these becomes harder to replace, not easier.

What should the agent do, and what stays with you?

A well-set-up firm draws the line by depth and by consequence:

  • Reading and filing correspondence to the right matter (depth 1 to 3): the agent does it; you sample it.
  • Drafting routine letters, chasers and covering emails (depth 2): you check and send, or the fee earner does.
  • Diary entries for limitation dates and court deadlines: the agent proposes, a person confirms from the source document.
  • Anything sent to court or the other side: held for a person.
  • Client account payments: held, always, and never on the strength of an email.

What does a caught error look like?

Take a legal secretary we will call Ruth at a litigation practice. The agent reads an incoming email from the other side's solicitors that mentions "the order made on the 3rd" and proposes a diary entry for filing a defence fourteen days later. Ruth opens the sealed court order on the file. The order was made on the 3rd but sent out on the 6th, and the time limit runs from service, so the email's date is the wrong anchor.

She edits the entry, writes "Deadline runs from service per order; date taken from sealed order, not from correspondence," and flags the fee earner. The sealed order issued by the court outranks a statement in the other side's email. Getting that wrong could mean a missed deadline and a claim against the firm.

Which skills should you learn?

  1. Source-first checking: deadlines, names and figures confirmed against the document that creates them, not the agent's reading of an email.
  2. Proofreading for law, not just spelling: party names, defined terms, references to the right clause.
  3. Confidentiality and privilege: noticing when an attachment or a recipient is wrong before it goes.
  4. Payment red lines: any change of bank details for completion or settlement monies is verified by phone using details already on file.
  5. Writing short reasons for edits, so fee earners and the agent's owner see the pattern.
  6. Matter hygiene: making sure the agent files to the right matter, because one misfiled email can breach confidentiality.

The money discipline overlaps with AI skills for a bookkeeper, and the candidate-facing paperwork side of the firm is covered in AI skills for a recruiter.

How do you show these skills?

Show what you protect, not how fast you type. The AI agent skills CV section for a legal secretary gives lines such as "verified agent-proposed deadlines against sealed orders", and rewriting a legal secretary CV for AI operations jobs covers the rest. Review can become a role in its own right; see how to move from legal secretary to AI agent reviewer. The broader expectations are in AI skills for job seekers.

Questions people ask

Is the legal secretary role disappearing?

The typing-heavy version is shrinking. Firms still need people who know the matters, the clients and the procedure well enough to catch errors before they leave the building. The role is moving towards checking, coordination and client contact.

Should I train as a paralegal instead?

It is one route, and a good one if you enjoy legal substance. Reviewing agent work is another, and many of the same skills apply to both. You can build AI review skills without leaving your current role.

Can an agent send letters to clients on its own?

Some firms allow agents to send routine, low-risk messages such as appointment reminders within strict bounds. Substantive advice and anything to the court or the other side should stay with a person.
