Legal secretaries hold two things a law firm cannot hand to an agent unchecked: deadlines and confidentiality. Rewrite your CV so it shows the diary dates you controlled, the documents you checked before they left the firm and the correspondence you drafted for a fee earner to approve. That is review work, and it transfers directly to AI operations.
What changes for legal secretaries in a firm that uses agents?
Much of the typing, formatting and filing moves to agents. An agent can draft a standard client care letter, format a document to the firm's style, assemble a court bundle index, file incoming emails to the right matter and prepare time entries from a fee earner's diary. Those are real savings, and they change what a firm needs from its support staff.
What a firm still needs is a person who notices the problem before it leaves the building. The draft letter that names the wrong client. The bundle that includes a privileged document. The diary entry that records a court date from an email but misses that the deadline runs from service, not from receipt. Legal secretaries catch these every week. An AI operations role in a law firm is, in large part, that same catching done on agent output.
So the rewrite is about evidence of checking. The guide to the AI skills employers ask job seekers to prove covers the general skills; for you the sharpest are review judgement and escalation.
How do you rewrite the CV, step by step?
- You: read the duties in the advert. "Legal operations assistant", "document services reviewer", "practice support specialist" and "legal secretary" with a line about automated drafting can all be the role you want. Look for review, quality and escalation.
- You: describe drafts as drafts (depth 2). Letters and documents an agent prepares are depth 2: the agent writes, a person sends. Say you checked drafts for accuracy and sent only on approval.
- You: describe your deadline control. Key dates entered, checked and reminded. This is the item firms fear most to get wrong.
- You: describe your confidentiality decisions. What you withheld from a bundle, who you checked with before sending, which matters were restricted.
- You: describe the routine you ran (depth 3). File opening steps, time entry, document formatting within the firm's rules.
- You: add any certificate with its number.
Which legal secretary tasks map to agent depth?
| Legal support task | The agent does | Depth | Stays with a person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correspondence | Drafts letters and emails from instructions | 2 | Checking and sending, especially to the other side |
| Diary and key dates | Reads dates from incoming documents | 1 | Confirming the date and how it is calculated |
| Document formatting | Applies the firm's style | 3 | Final checks on documents for court or signature |
| Bundles | Builds the index and orders documents | 2 to 3 | Deciding what goes in, and privilege |
| Time entries | Drafts entries from the diary | 2 | Fee earner approval |
The second row deserves care in interview. An agent can read a date from a letter, but a date in an email from outside the firm is external information. It informs the diary; it does not settle the deadline. Show that you treat it that way.
What do the rewritten lines look like?
Sample lines with invented details:
- Before: "Typed correspondence for two partners." After: "Prepared and checked correspondence for two litigation partners; corrected party names and references in drafts before approval and sending."
- Before: "Managed diaries." After: "Controlled key dates for around 80 live matters; checked every court deadline against the source document and the firm's calculation rules."
- Before: "Prepared court bundles." After: "Built hearing bundles and reviewed contents with the fee earner to exclude privileged material."

How do you show evidence an employer can check?
Three kinds of evidence carry weight. A fee earner referee who can confirm your accuracy. A specific example of an error you caught, told without client details. And a certificate with a number.
Pryme Intelligence Academy offers a free Foundations badge, about four hours, and an Operator certificate for people who run a live review queue. If your firm does not use Pryme, the Operator practicum runs on a simulated queue in a free workspace. List any certificate with the credential, number and expiry; anyone can check it at source. It is a professional certificate, not a legal qualification, and it should sit beside, not replace, any legal secretarial training you hold.
Be honest about timing. If you are happy in your role and your firm has no plans for agents, the Foundations badge may be enough for now. Take the Operator certificate when a move is in sight, so it is current when employers check.
What should you track, and where does it go wrong?
Track which roles reply: legal operations, practice support or secretarial roles with new duties. If legal operations replies, put the deadline line first.
Common mistakes:
- Listing typing speed. Words per minute is the skill agents replace.
- Calling yourself "highly organised". Show the diary you controlled instead.
- Leaving out confidentiality. It is a core legal skill and a core risk with agents.
- Not looking sideways. Paralegal and finance support roles value the same accuracy; see the guides to rewriting a paralegal CV and rewriting a bookkeeper CV.

Questions people ask
Will agents replace legal secretaries?
They will take over much of the drafting and formatting. Firms still need people who check, control deadlines and protect confidentiality, and those duties matter more, not less, once drafting is automated.
Should I mention the case management system I use?
Describe it generally, such as "a case management system", and say what you did in it. The checking is the skill.
Is legal operations a step up?
It can be. Legal operations roles often involve process and quality work across a team. Show you can spot and fix recurring errors, not only single ones.
