AI agent skills by role·Answer

What is an AI agent reviewer?

An AI agent reviewer is the person who approves, edits or declines what an agent prepares. What the role involves and how it differs from approval.

An AI agent reviewer is the person who approves, edits or declines what an agent has prepared before it takes effect. Reviewers decide held items: drafts and actions the agent was not allowed to complete on its own. They need to read the facts behind each draft, recognise red lines, and record decisions filed under their name.

Where does the reviewer sit in the decision chain?

At the point where an action is held. Every action an agent attempts meets five bounds at once: its role scope, its certificate, its sources, the business’s own limits and the platform guardrails. The outcome is one of four verdicts:

  • Allowed: inside every bound; the agent completes it.
  • Held: drafted and waiting for a named person. This is the reviewer’s queue.
  • Refused: outside the agent’s bounds.
  • Withheld: refused on purpose at the platform floor for every agent at every depth.

Held items exist where the business has decided a person should look. Depth shapes how many there are. At depth 2, the agent drafts and a person sends everything. At depth 3, routine work within bounds completes, and only exceptions are held. At depth 4, actions that move money or are hard to undo may complete within tight limits; most businesses still hold many of them.

What does a reviewer actually do with a held item?

Four things, in order.

  1. Reads the draft and the facts behind it. Each fact carries its provenance: sealed (from the system of record), signed (a named party answers for it), declared (stated by someone, unverified) or external (an email, a web page). An external claim cannot authorise a payment.
  2. Checks for red lines. Actions that must never be approved, however good the case.
  3. Decides. Approve as drafted, edit and approve, decline, or escalate to someone with more authority.
  4. Records why, briefly, when editing or declining. Those notes are how the agent’s brief and sources improve.

Take a reviewer in a lender’s servicing team. A held item proposes a payment holiday for a borrower. The draft is good, but one fact, the borrower’s claim of reduced income, is declared. The policy requires evidence above a certain amount. The reviewer declines, asks for evidence and notes the reason.

What does a reviewer need to know?

The vocabulary of depth, verdicts and provenance. The business’s limits and red lines for their area. Their own approver rule: what types and values they may approve. And how to read the record when a decision is questioned later.

Reviewers also need authority. Someone who can see held items but cannot block or change them is not a control. That idea runs through the reviewer is the control, not the agent.

How is a reviewer different from an approver?

Often they are the same person, but the jobs differ. Review is about quality: is this draft right? Approval is about authority: is this person allowed to commit the business to it? A junior reviewer may check a high-value payment for accuracy, then pass it to an approver with the authority to release it. The parallel term agent reviewer covers the same role in more general language.

How are reviewers organised?

On a rota, by decision type. Held items need named people with the right authority on every shift, plus cover for when an agent’s certificate lapses after 90 days or a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1 the same day, sending its work back to people. See what a reviewer rota is, and worked examples for an IT team and an operations team. The role sits within a wider map in AI agent skills by role.

How do you know a reviewer is good?

From the record, not from impressions. Good reviewers decide in reasonable time, change drafts when they are wrong and not otherwise, escalate the right things, and never let a red line through. Calibration sessions, where reviewers decide the same items and compare, show whether judgement is consistent across the team. Some businesses go further and tie approval rights to a current certificate, so that a reviewer whose certification has lapsed cannot approve until they renew.

Questions people ask

Is a reviewer the same as a quality checker?

No. A quality checker samples finished work after the event. A reviewer decides before the action takes effect, and the decision is part of the control.

Can an agent review another agent’s work?

An orchestrator at depth 5 can coordinate other agents, but an agent should never be the approver of another agent’s held action. Approval stays with people.

How many items should a reviewer handle?

Enough to stay fluent, not so many that review becomes bulk approval. Measure time per decision and overturn rates to set a sensible load.
