An AI operations analyst watches how a company's agents perform across all their decisions, not one case at a time. They track how often work is held, declined or escalated, spot drift, investigate incidents and take fixes to the agent's owner. Reviewers judge individual items; the analyst judges the pattern and keeps the whole operation healthy.
What are the main responsibilities?
- Watching the numbers. How many items each capability handles, how many are held for a person, how many of those reviewers decline, and how long held items wait.
- Spotting drift. A capability that starts holding or failing more often than usual is a signal, even if no single decision broke a rule.
- Investigating incidents. When something goes wrong, the analyst reconstructs it from the decision record: what the agent saw, what it did, which bound decided and who approved.
- Running the weekly review. Bringing reviewers, the agent's owner and sometimes a trainer together to agree what to change.
- Tracking certificates and usage. Knowing when each capability's certificate lapses, and keeping an eye on usage and cost against plan.
- Feeding fixes back. Writing up patterns clearly enough that a trainer can act on them.
Who does an operations analyst work with?
Reviewers send the analyst their notes and declined cases. The agent owner decides what changes. Trainers, or builders, make changes to the agent's brief, sources and bounds. Team leads and business managers want to know how the work is going. Governance analysts and internal audit rely on the analyst's records being complete.
What does an investigation look like?
Take an analyst we will call Sipho at a lender. On Monday the dashboard shows that the collections agent's hold rate on payment plan proposals has risen from about one in ten to one in four over a week. No reviewer has raised it, because each held item looked reasonable on its own.
Sipho traces the change. The rise began the day a new affordability source was connected. That source reports income as declared by the customer, where the old one used verified bank data, which is signed. Because the agent will not propose a plan on declared income above a threshold, it now holds far more cases. The agent is behaving correctly; the source change caused the queue to swell. Sipho takes it to the owner with two options: restore the verified source for plans above the threshold, or staff the queue. The owner picks the first. Without an analyst, the team would have spent weeks working harder rather than fixing the cause.
What skills does the job need?
| Skill | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Comfort with numbers | Most signals show up first as a change in a rate or a wait time |
| Reading decision records | Every investigation depends on reconstructing what happened |
| Understanding governed agents | Depth, provenance, verdicts and certification explain most patterns |
| Clear writing | Fixes only happen if the write-up is plain and specific |
| Domain knowledge | You need to know what a good outcome looks like in the business |
| Calm under pressure | Incidents arrive at bad moments |
Spreadsheets are enough for much of the job. Some analysts use query tools, but the skill is asking the right question of the numbers, not the tool.
How do people get into AI operations analysis?
The commonest route is through review: reviewers who notice patterns and write good notes are asked to take on analysis. Business analysts, quality analysts, operations coordinators and compliance analysts also move across because they already work with processes, numbers and evidence. Read adverts for duties such as monitoring, exceptions, quality and incident handling, because the title varies a lot.

Questions people ask
Is an AI operations analyst a data scientist?
No. A data scientist builds models or analyses data in depth. An AI operations analyst runs a live operation, using fairly simple numbers to spot problems and get them fixed.
Do operations analysts also review cases?
Often, especially in smaller teams. Reviewing keeps the analyst close to what the numbers mean.
Where is this role advertised?
In any market where businesses run agents in production. For one country's view, see how to become an AI operations analyst in Australia.
