Credential expiry is the date after which a certificate or other credential stops counting as current, so the holder must renew it to keep relying on it. Expiry is planned at the moment of issue. It says, in advance, how long the issuer is willing to vouch for the holder before checking again.
Why do credentials for AI agent work expire?
The skill being certified changes. Agents gain capabilities, platforms are updated, rules move. A certificate that never expired would vouch indefinitely for knowledge that may no longer apply. The argument is made in full in expiry is what makes a credential honest.
Expiry also gives the organisation a natural point to act. If approval rights depend on a current certificate, expiry is the moment those rights pause until the person renews.
How does expiry work for people and for agents?
Two different clocks run side by side, and it is easy to confuse them.
| People | Agents | |
|---|---|---|
| What is certified | A person's competence in a role | One capability of one agent, for one customer |
| Typical validity | 12 or 24 months | 90 days |
| How it is renewed | An update and a short check, or reassessment | Replay against the customer's real cases |
| What expiry triggers | Approval rights should pause | The capability can no longer act at that depth |
An agent's certificate lapses after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day. A person's certificate for overseeing agents runs much longer because human competence decays more slowly than an agent's fit to changing data.
What is an example?
A team lead holds a reviewer certificate issued in March with a 12-month validity. In late February the admin view flags it as due. The lead completes the renewal, and the new expiry shows at source. A colleague misses the window; on the expiry date their certificate shows as lapsed, and under the team's policy their right to release held refunds is suspended until renewal. Meanwhile the refund agent itself has been recertified four times in the same year, on its own 90-day cycle.
How is expiry different from revocation?
Expiry is the planned end of validity. Revocation is the issuer withdrawing a credential before it expires, for cause, such as a serious error or misconduct. Both mean the credential is no longer current, but they say different things: an expired certificate says "not renewed yet"; a revoked one says "withdrawn". A verifiable credential shows either status at source.
Which terms are related?
- Recertification: the renewal process at or before expiry.
- Micro-credential: a smaller credential, which may or may not expire; see what a micro-credential is.
- Training records: what you keep to show who was current when, covered in what records a company should keep of AI agent training.
The wider topic is AI literacy and certification for people who work with agents.
Where the Academy fits
In Pryme Intelligence Academy, Certified Pryme Operator and Certified Pryme Builder are valid for 12 months and Certified Pryme Architect for 24. Operator renewal is an update module and a short quiz. The free Foundations badge has no expiry but is stamped with the product version. Lapsed certificates show as such at source through VerifyDoc.ai.
Questions people ask
What happens to past approvals when a certificate expires?
Nothing changes retroactively. Approvals made while the certificate was current stand. Only decisions made after expiry fall outside the person's certified competence.
Should we allow a grace period?
Set it in policy if you allow one, and make it short. Many teams instead remind people well before expiry so that a grace period is never needed.
