AI literacy and certification·Definition

What is a credential issuer?

A credential issuer is the body that awards a certificate, stands behind it and keeps its live status. Why it matters when checking AI agent skills.

A credential issuer is the organisation that awards a certificate or other credential, stands behind it, and keeps the authoritative record of its status: current, lapsed or revoked. The issuer is the party you are trusting when you rely on a credential, and the only party that can tell you whether it still holds.

Why does the issuer matter?

A credential is a claim made by the issuer about the holder. Its value depends on who made it and whether they keep it accurate. If an issuer cannot say whether a certificate is still current, or anyone can print one that looks the same, the claim is weak however good the training was.

For people overseeing AI agents, this matters because approval rights may depend on the credential. A team lead deciding whether a contractor may approve held payments is relying on the issuer's judgement and on the issuer's record being up to date.

What does an issuer do in practice?

A responsible issuer:

  • sets the standard and the assessment;
  • qualifies the assessors who judge the evidence;
  • issues each credential with a unique number and a stated expiry;
  • keeps a live record of status that anyone can check by number or QR code;
  • marks credentials as lapsed when they expire and revoked when withdrawn;
  • publishes a register of current holders where the credential is public.

The issuer may use a separate service to issue and host the verification page. The issuer still owns the judgement; the service carries it.

What is an example?

A contact centre outsourcer needs to show a bank client that its team leads can oversee the agent drafting complaint responses. The leads hold certificates in reviewing agent decisions. The bank's vendor manager ignores the attached PDFs and checks each number on the issuer's verification page. Two show as current; one shows as lapsed. The bank asks the outsourcer to keep that lead off approvals until renewal. The issuer's record, not the outsourcer's paperwork, settled it.

How is an issuer different from a training provider?

A training provider delivers learning: lessons, labs, workshops. An issuer awards the credential and answers for it. They are often the same organisation, but not always. A company might run its own internal training and rely on an external issuer for the certificate, or the reverse. When you assess a credential, ask who issued it and whether that party keeps a live record, not just who taught the course.

Issuers also differ from verifiers. Anyone can verify; only the issuer can change the status. How long that status lasts is covered in what credential expiry is and why expiry makes a credential honest.

Which terms are related?

  • Micro-credential: a small credential an issuer may award, explained in what a micro-credential is.
  • Checking at source: confirming status with the issuer directly.
  • Public register: the issuer's list of current holders.

Organisation-wide programmes, covered in how to build AI literacy across a whole organisation, often rely on one issuer so that records stay consistent. The wider topic is AI literacy and certification for people who work with agents.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai. Anyone can check one at source by number or QR code, and a lapsed or revoked certificate shows as such on the same page. A public register lists certified people by name, credential and expiry.

Questions people ask

Can an employer be a credential issuer?

Yes. Many issue internal credentials. The test is the same: does the employer keep a live, checkable record of status, and would an outsider trust its assessment?

What if the issuer stops operating?

The credential loses its source of truth. Ask any issuer how records stay checkable over time, and keep your own record of when you verified each credential.
