Training teams for AI agents·Definition

What is a digital academy?

A digital academy is an organisation's in-house online school. What it should teach people who oversee AI agents, and how it differs from an AI academy.

A digital academy is an organisation's own structured online school for building digital skills across its workforce, with courses, practice, assessments and credentials under one name. Once AI agents do part of the work, a digital academy also has to teach people how to supervise agents that act, not just how to use digital tools.

Why do organisations build a digital academy?

Scale and consistency. A large firm cannot send thousands of people to classroom courses every time its systems change. A digital academy gives everyone the same content, records who completed what, and lets the firm add courses as new tools arrive.

The risk is that the academy becomes a library: plenty of content, little proof that anyone can do anything differently. That matters more with agents than with most tools, because a person who approves an agent's held action is making a decision the business answers for.

What should a digital academy teach about agents?

A digital academy built for software adoption teaches features. One built for agent oversight teaches decisions. In practice that means:

  1. How a governed agent decides: depth, the five bounds of the minimum chain, and the four verdicts.
  2. How to review a held action: checking sources and their provenance, and recording why.
  3. What to do when something goes wrong: stopping an agent, reading the record, reporting.
  4. How authority expires: an agent's certificate lapses after 90 days, and people's credentials should expire too.

Each of these needs practice in a real or realistic workspace, not just reading.

What does a digital academy look like in practice?

Take a property management firm with offices in several cities. Its digital academy already runs courses on the lettings system and data protection. Before deploying an agent that drafts maintenance orders and tenant letters, it adds a short track: an awareness module for all staff, and a reviewer module with labs for the people who approve drafts. The guide on how property management firms should train staff before deploying agents sets out who goes first.

Credentials matter here. A digital badge can show completion; a verifiable digital certificate lets anyone confirm, at source, that the reviewer's credential is current.

How is a digital academy different from an AI academy?

A digital academy covers the whole digital estate: systems, data, security, ways of working. An AI academy focuses on AI specifically, from literacy to building and governing models and agents. Many firms run the AI academy as a faculty inside the digital academy.

The word "digital" also appears in regulation in a different sense. DORA is about digital operational resilience in financial services, and its testing duties are covered in DORA resilience testing for AI agents. A digital academy can host the training that supports it, but the two are not the same thing.

Which related terms should you know?

  • Learning management system: the software that delivers and tracks the academy's courses.
  • Credential: the badge or certificate a learner earns.
  • Learning path: the route through the academy for one role.

External programmes can sit inside a digital academy too. Pryme Intelligence Academy, for example, can be one of the tracks a firm points its agent reviewers to, alongside its own courses. For the overall approach, see training teams for AI agents.

Questions people ask

Does a digital academy need its own certificates?

Not always. Internal completion records are fine for awareness. For people who approve agent actions, a credential that can be checked at source and shows expiry is stronger evidence for an auditor.

Who should own the digital academy?

Usually learning and development, with each faculty owned by the function that answers for it. Agent oversight content should be co-owned by whoever answers for the agents' risk.
