AI literacy and certification·Definition

What is a digital badge?

A digital badge is an online credential that recognises a specific achievement. How a badge differs from a certificate for people who work with AI agents.

A digital badge is a small online credential, usually an image carrying data about who earned it, what for, from whom and when, that recognises a specific achievement such as completing a course. It can be displayed on a profile and, where the issuer supports it, checked. It typically signals learning, not assessed competence for a role.

Why do badges matter in AI agent training?

Most people in an organisation do not approve agent actions, but they still need to understand what agents are and how they are governed. Executives, buyers, project staff and new joiners benefit from a shared baseline. A badge is a light way to recognise that baseline and to see who has reached it across a large group.

Badges also lower the threshold to start. A free foundation course with a badge brings people in; a smaller group then goes on to the certificates that carry approval rights.

How does a badge work in practice?

The learner completes a defined piece of learning, often with a short test. The issuer awards the badge and records it. The learner can share it on a profile or in an email signature. Good badges state exactly what they recognise and from which version of the material, because content about agents goes out of date as products change.

What a badge should not do is stand in for a certificate. If approval rights depend on a credential, that credential should be assessed, expire, and be checkable at source. The difference is set out in the difference between a badge and a certificate in AI agent training.

What is an example?

A logistics firm rolls out an agent that drafts customer delay notices. It asks every customer-facing employee to complete a foundation course, and each earns a badge. Six team leads who will approve the agent's notices go further and earn a certificate after an exam and supervised practice. The badge tells HR who has the baseline; the certificate tells the operations manager who may approve. Both have a place, and neither replaces the other.

How is a badge different from a certificate?

Digital badge Certificate
Recognises Learning or participation Assessed competence for a role
Assessment Light or none Exam, practice or both, judged by an assessor
Expiry Often none Usually fixed, then renewed
Typical use Baseline literacy Approval rights, client and supervisor evidence

A verifiable digital certificate adds a live status check at the issuer. Badges can be verifiable too, but their claim is smaller.

Which terms are related?

  • Micro-credential: a focused credential that sits between a badge and a full certificate.
  • Assessor: the person who judges evidence for a certificate, explained in what an assessor is.
  • Digital academy: the programme that issues badges and certificates, covered in what a digital academy is.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy's Foundations track, about four hours across six modules, earns the Foundations badge. It is free, does not expire, and is stamped with the product version, so anyone reading it knows which version of the material it reflects. Roles that approve agent work go on to the Operator certificate.

Questions people ask

Should a badge ever give someone approval rights?

No. Approval rights should rest on assessed competence that expires and can be checked. A badge can be a prerequisite for that training, not a substitute.

Is a badge worth adding to a CV?

It shows a baseline and an interest, which has some value. Hiring managers for agent oversight roles will look for an assessed certificate.
