AI agent jobs and careers·Definition

What is a digital operations role?

A digital operations role runs a business process through digital systems and, increasingly, AI agents. What the job involves and how it differs from IT operations.

A digital operations role is a job that runs a business process through digital systems rather than paper or manual handling: case management tools, ledgers, queues and, increasingly, AI agents. The person owns the flow of work, not the software. They keep cases moving, handle exceptions, check quality and decide what an agent has prepared.

Why does the term matter for job seekers?

"Digital operations" appears in adverts across banking, insurance, retail and public services, and it covers a wide range. Some roles are close to customer service; others are close to analysis. Knowing what sits underneath the label helps you judge whether a vacancy suits you.

As agents take on more drafting and routine processing, many digital operations jobs now include oversight duties: deciding held items, watching review queues and raising problems when an agent's output drifts. Those duties are where the useful experience is.

What does the work look like in practice?

Read the duties, not the title. A digital operations role usually involves several of these:

  • Working cases in a queue and meeting service standards.
  • Handling exceptions that systems or agents cannot resolve.
  • Reviewing and approving drafts prepared by an agent.
  • Checking data quality and correcting records.
  • Reporting volumes, delays and recurring problems.
  • Testing changes before they go live.

If an advert mentions review, exceptions, approvals, quality or escalation, it involves the judgement that AI operations depends on.

An example

Take a digital operations associate we will call Hana at an online bank. Her team handles account changes. An agent drafts most of them; routine address updates complete on their own, and changes to a joint account are held for a person. Hana decides those held items, checks the provenance of each fact (is the new address declared by the customer or confirmed by a document?) and escalates anything that looks like fraud. She also logs patterns for the weekly review.

How is it different from IT operations?

IT operations keeps the systems running: servers, access, incidents, upgrades. Digital operations uses those systems to run a business process. An IT operations engineer fixes the queue when it goes down; a digital operations colleague works the cases in it.

It also differs from a hybrid role, which combines two kinds of expertise in one job, and from a gig role, which is short, task-based work without a standing place in the operation.

Questions people ask

Is a digital operations role technical?

Mostly not. You need to be comfortable with systems and data, but the core skill is running a process well: following policy, judging exceptions and keeping a clean record.

Can digital operations lead to AI operations jobs?

Often, because the duties overlap. Reviewing an agent's held items in a digital operations team is direct experience for reviewer, team lead and operations analyst roles.
