AI agent jobs and careers·Definition

What is a role profile?

A role profile sets out a job's purpose, duties, decisions and required skills, independent of who holds it. What it means for AI roles and how it differs.

A role profile is a document that describes a job independently of the person in it: its purpose, main responsibilities, the decisions it holds, who it works with and the skills and evidence it requires. Employers use it to hire, grade, train and assess. For AI operations roles, a good profile states exactly what the person decides and what the agent does.

Why does a role profile matter to you?

The advert gets you through the door; the role profile sets the terms of the job once you are in it. It is what your performance will be judged against, what a promotion case will be compared with and what defines your authority when something goes wrong.

In work alongside AI agents, that last point matters most. If the profile says you "support the AI system", nobody knows whether you may decline an agent's draft or must pass it on. If it says you "decide held refund requests up to the business's limit and escalate above it", your authority is clear.

What does a role profile contain?

Most profiles include:

  • Purpose. One or two sentences on why the role exists.
  • Key responsibilities. Five to eight main duties.
  • Decisions. What the role may decide, approve or escalate, with limits.
  • Relationships. Who the role reports to, works with and supports.
  • Knowledge and skills. What the person must know and be able to do.
  • Evidence. Qualifications or certificates expected, and whether they must be current.
  • Measures. How success is judged.

For AI roles, look for which agents the person oversees, at what depth they work, which items are held for this role and which red lines it guards.

An example

Take a profile for "Claims review specialist" at an invented insurer. Purpose: decide claims held by the claims agent and keep its decisions within policy. Decisions: approve, edit or decline held claims up to a set value; escalate injury claims and any claim resting on unverified external documents. Evidence: a current operator-level certificate, renewed annually. Measures: decision quality on monthly samples, no missed red lines, reasonable time per decision. Someone reading it knows exactly what they would be signing up for.

How is a role profile different from a job description or a job advert?

The terms overlap and some employers use them interchangeably. Where they differ, a job description lists duties in more detail, often for one specific post. A role profile is broader and may cover several posts at the same level. A job advert is a marketing document drawn from either, written to attract applicants. When you are offered a role, ask for the profile, not only the advert.

A profile also differs from the duties of a hybrid role or a digital operations role, which are kinds of job; the profile is how any of them is written down.

When a profile names a certificate as evidence, it helps if it can be checked. Certificates from Pryme Intelligence Academy are issued through VerifyDoc.ai and show whether they are current, lapsed or revoked, which suits profiles that require a current certificate.

The wider set of roles is in AI agent jobs and careers. Use the profile to shape your application, as covered in how to write a cover letter for an AI operations role, and to set terms in how to negotiate a new role after getting AI certified. The phrase "profile" also appears in AI frameworks, such as the NIST Generative AI Profile, with a different meaning.

Questions people ask

Can I ask to change my role profile?

Yes, especially when agents change your work. Propose specific changes, such as new decisions you now make, and ask for the profile to be updated and regraded if needed.

What if my role has no profile?

Ask your manager to agree one in writing, even briefly. Without it, your authority and measures are open to interpretation.
