What is a lapsed certificate?

A lapsed certificate has passed its expiry date without renewal. What lapsing means for your approvals and CV, and how it differs from revoked.

A lapsed certificate is one that has reached its expiry date without being renewed. It was earned properly and was valid, but it no longer shows the holder as current. Lapsing says nothing bad about your conduct; it says only that the evidence of your competence is older than the issuer is prepared to stand behind.

Why does lapsing matter for AI agent work?

Work with AI agents changes quickly. The product changes, the rules a business sets for its agents change, and the kinds of cases an agent sees change. A certificate with an expiry date is a promise that the holder was checked against something close to the current way of working. Once it lapses, that promise stops.

For you, the practical effect depends on your employer. A business can make approval rights depend on a current certificate. Where it does, a lapsed certificate can mean your name drops off the list of people who may approve held agent actions until you renew. What that means for a reviewer day to day is covered in what a lapsed AI agent certificate means for a reviewer.

How does a certificate lapse in practice?

Nothing dramatic happens on the expiry date. The record at the issuer changes status from current to lapsed, and anyone who checks it sees that. The certificate number stays the same, and the history stays visible, so an employer can see that you held it and when it ran out.

Agents work the same way. On Pryme Intelligence, an agent's certificate lapses after 90 days unless it is renewed against fresh cases, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day. People who oversee agents are held to the same idea: authority rests on evidence that is recent.

Businesses that track this well keep a written procedure for what happens when a person's certificate runs out, such as the one in the lapsed certificate procedure template.

What is an example?

A claims handler we will call Tomas earns an operator certificate and spends a year approving agent-drafted settlement letters. He changes teams, forgets the renewal and the certificate lapses. His new team lead checks the register during a routine review, sees the lapsed status and moves his approvals back to a colleague for a week. Tomas completes the renewal, the record shows him as current again, and his approvals return.

No one questioned his work. The lapse was administrative, and it was fixed by renewing.

How is lapsed different from revoked?

A lapsed certificate ran out of time. A revoked certificate was withdrawn by the issuer before its expiry, usually because of a breach of the standard or because it was issued in error. Lapsed is fixed by renewing; revoked is not fixed that way. Both show on the issuer's record, which is why the certificate status an employer sees is more useful than the paper certificate you hold.

Which terms are related?

  • Certificate status: the live state of a certificate at the issuer, such as current, lapsed or revoked.
  • Renewal: the step that keeps a certificate current.
  • Professional certificate: a time-limited credential assessed against a standard, explained in what a professional certificate is.

The guide to AI operator certification sets out how long each certificate lasts and why.

Where the Academy fits

Certified Pryme Operator and Certified Pryme Builder are valid for 12 months, and Certified Pryme Architect for 24 months. Operator renewal is an update module and a short quiz. Certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai, and a lapsed certificate shows as lapsed on the same page an employer uses to check it, so your record stays honest whether or not you renew.

Questions people ask

Should I keep a lapsed certificate on my CV?

Yes, if you label it accurately with the dates you held it. It shows you met the standard once. If the role relies on that certificate, renew before you apply, because an employer who checks will see the lapsed status.

Do I have to start again if my certificate lapses?

That depends on the issuer's rules and how long it has been lapsed. Many issuers let you renew for a period after expiry; others ask you to resit after a longer gap. Read the renewal terms when you are first certified, not when the reminder arrives.
