Certificate status is the current state of an issued certificate, as shown on the issuer's own record: valid, lapsed, suspended or revoked. It answers the question an employer actually cares about. Not "was this person ever certified?" but "are they certified now?" A certificate printed a year ago says nothing about its status now; only a check at source does.
Why does status matter more than the document?
Skills in AI operations go stale. Policies change, agents change, and the practices of governed review move on. A certificate that requires renewal reflects that, but only if the people relying on it check whether it was renewed.
A document cannot do that. A PDF of a lapsed certificate looks identical to a PDF of a current one. Status is a live fact held by the issuer, and the only reliable way to see it is to look it up there, by number or QR code.
What statuses are common?
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Valid or current | Issued and within its validity period, not withdrawn |
| Lapsed or expired | The validity period ended without renewal |
| Suspended | Temporarily not valid, often pending a review |
| Revoked | Withdrawn by the issuer, for example after misconduct or error |
| Renewed | Extended for a new period after the renewal requirements were met |
Some issuers use fewer categories. The important point is that the status shown is the issuer's current view.
An example
Take an applicant we will call Siobhan, whose CV lists an operator certificate. The hiring manager scans the QR code and sees the status: lapsed, three weeks ago. Siobhan had meant to do the renewal module and forgot. She completes the update module and short quiz, the status returns to current, and her application goes forward. A manager who had trusted the PDF alone would not have known. The layout of such a certificate is shown in the AI agent certificate template.
How is certificate status different from chartered status?
Chartered status is a professional standing granted by a chartered professional body to members who meet its requirements. It is a title you hold, usually maintained by membership and continuing development. Certificate status is the state of one specific certificate. You can hold chartered status and also have a certificate whose status is lapsed.
The word "status" also appears in operations work, for example when an AI agent answers order status questions. That is a different subject: the state of a customer's order, not a credential.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai, and their status can be checked at source by anyone. A lapsed or revoked certificate shows as such on the same page. Operator and Builder certificates are valid for 12 months, Architect for 24; Operator renewal is an update module and a short quiz.
Related terms
The wider subject is in AI operator certification. Status matters less for a vendor certificate that never expires, and more for any certificate tied to current practice.
Questions people ask
Can an employer see my certificate status without asking me?
If the issuer runs a public register or a check by number, yes, within what the register shows. Many issuers list name, credential and expiry so that employers can confirm them directly.
What should I do if my certificate is about to lapse?
Renew before the expiry date if you can. If you are applying for jobs, a current status avoids awkward questions.
