A probation period is the first stretch of a new job, usually a few months, during which you and your employer confirm that the role suits both sides. Your performance is reviewed more closely, and in many places notice terms are shorter. At the end, the employer confirms your appointment, extends probation or ends the employment.
Why does probation matter in AI operations?
In AI review roles, probation often has a practical shape: your approval rights grow as your decisions are checked. On day one you may decide held items only with a second person checking. By the end of probation you may hold your own queue within set limits.
That makes probation a period of evidence. Every decision you make is filed, so your record is visible to your manager. A clean record of careful decisions, with sensible escalations and no missed red lines, is the strongest case for passing.
How does probation work in practice?
Terms vary by employer and country, and your contract sets them. Commonly:
- A set length, written into the contract, sometimes with an option to extend.
- Regular check-ins with your manager, often at set points.
- Clear objectives for what "passing" means.
- Shorter notice periods on either side.
- A formal review at the end, confirmed in writing.
In AI operations, objectives often include decision quality, time per decision, use of escalation and completing required training. Ask for them in writing on your first day if they are not already set.
An example
Take a new reviewer we will call Ben at a lender. His first month is a shadow period: he sits with a senior reviewer and decides items that are all checked. In month two he gets his own queue for low-value hardship requests. At the three-month review his manager looks at his record: high agreement with senior colleagues, three well-judged escalations, no red lines missed. Probation is confirmed and his approval limit rises.
How is probation different from a shadow period or a grace period?
A shadow period is a short stretch, often inside probation, where you watch and practise without your decisions counting alone. Probation is the whole trial period of the employment. A grace period is something else: extra time allowed before a deadline or penalty applies, such as for a payment or a renewal.
Probation is also different for the agents you oversee. An agent does not get a trial period; its depth is earned from certification evidence, and a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1 the same day.
If your employer uses Pryme, the Operator practicum can often run alongside probation, since both rest on two weeks or more of real review decisions. The practicum standard of nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line gives you a clear target.

The wider picture of roles is in AI agent jobs and careers. Internal candidates often pass probation faster, which is part of the argument in why the best AI operations hires come from inside the business. Questions people ask
Can probation be extended?
Often, if the contract allows it. An extension usually comes with specific objectives. Ask exactly what needs to change and by when.
What happens if I make a serious mistake during probation?
It depends on the mistake and your employer. Reporting it promptly and showing what you learned counts for a lot. Hiding it is what usually ends a probation.
