AI skills for job seekers·Definition

What is a skills portfolio?

A skills portfolio is a collection of evidence showing what you can do, organised around the skills a role needs. What to include for AI operations roles.

A skills portfolio is a curated collection of evidence that shows what you can do, organised around the skills a target role needs. Where a CV makes claims, a portfolio backs them with work samples, practice decisions and checkable certificates. It lets an employer see your work, not just read about it.

Why does a skills portfolio matter for AI operations roles?

Much of the work in AI operations is new, and many applicants have no job title in it to point to. A portfolio closes that gap. If you can show ten practice review decisions with clear reasons, a certificate an employer can check, and a short write-up of how you would handle a red line, you have given the hiring manager more to go on than most CVs do.

It also helps you. Building a portfolio forces you to practise the work, which is the best preparation for an interview about it.

What goes into a skills portfolio?

Organise it by skill, not by date. For each skill the role asks for, include one or two pieces of evidence:

Skill Evidence you can include
Reviewing agent decisions Practice cases with your decision and a written reason
Escalation A short case where you routed rather than decided, and why
Source checking A worked example of tracing a claim to its origin
Certification Certificate numbers an employer can check at source
Communication A rewritten agent draft, with a note on what you changed

Use made-up or anonymised cases. Never include real customer data or anything confidential from an employer. A ready structure is in the AI skills portfolio template.

What is an example?

A recent graduate we will call Zara has a degree in economics and no work experience with agents. She builds a short portfolio: eight practice decisions from a simulated review queue, each with a two-line reason; a one-page note on how she would decide whether a supplier bank detail change should be approved; and the numbers of her badge and certificate. She links it from her CV. At interview, the hiring manager has already read two of her decisions and asks her about one. The conversation starts from her evidence rather than her lack of experience. A full method for her situation is set out in how graduates can build an AI portfolio employers will trust.

How is a skills portfolio different from a CV or a portfolio career?

A CV summarises your history and makes claims in a page or two. A skills portfolio holds the evidence behind those claims. The CV gets you read; the portfolio helps you get believed. Use both, linked to each other.

A portfolio career is something else entirely: working several part-time or freelance roles at once rather than one job, explained in what a portfolio career is. People with portfolio careers often find a skills portfolio especially useful, since their experience is spread across several places.

Questions people ask

How long should a skills portfolio be?

Short enough to read in ten minutes. Five to ten strong pieces of evidence, each with a line saying what it shows, beat a long archive nobody will open.

Where should I host my portfolio?

Anywhere an employer can open it without signing up: a simple personal page or a shared document with view-only access. Link it from your CV and professional profile.
