AI agent skills by role·Answer

What should paralegals learn before working with AI agents?

Paralegals should learn how an agent cites sources, what depth it holds on drafting and deadlines, and how to check work before a lawyer relies on it.

Paralegals should start with citations. An agent's draft chronology or bundle index is only useful if every line traces to a document in the matter file, so paralegals must learn how the agent labels sources, what depth it holds for drafting and diary work, which items are held for them, and how to check work a lawyer will rely on.

Where does the agent fit in legal support work?

Paralegals spend much of their time on tasks that are exacting but repetitive: indexing documents, building chronologies, preparing bundles, extracting key terms from contracts, drafting routine correspondence and keeping the diary of deadlines. An agent can do the first pass on all of these quickly.

That changes the paralegal's role from producer to checker, and checking in legal work has its own discipline. A chronology with one wrong date, or a bundle missing one exhibit, can damage a case. The paralegal is often the last person to read the work closely before a lawyer signs it.

What should paralegals understand about the agent?

  • Sources and provenance. Every fact the agent uses carries a stamp. Documents in the firm's matter management system are sealed records of what was filed or received. A witness statement signed by the witness is signed. A client's email account of events is declared. A document from the other side's disclosure is external until checked. A chronology entry should show which it rests on.
  • Depth per task. The agent may read the matter file at depth 1 and draft indices, chronologies and routine letters at depth 2 for a person to send. Diary entries for court deadlines may be drafted, but the firm will usually hold them for a person to confirm.
  • The minimum chain. Each action meets role scope, certificate, sources, the firm's own limits and the platform guardrails; the lowest decides and the verdict names it. "Held: own limits, outgoing correspondence to court" is a firm rule, not an agent error.
  • Matter boundaries. The agent should only see the matter it is working on. Paralegals should notice and report any sign of material from another client appearing in a draft.
  • Certificates and lapses. A certificate lasts 90 days and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day. Drafts stop arriving; the paralegal should know why and not route around it.

What does the agent prepare, and what stays with the paralegal?

The agent The paralegal
Indexes documents and drafts the bundle Checks completeness against the court's directions
Drafts a chronology with citations Verifies key dates against the source documents
Extracts clauses and terms from contracts Flags anything unusual to the supervising lawyer
Drafts routine letters to the client Checks tone and accuracy before a lawyer approves
Proposes diary entries for deadlines Confirms each deadline and its calculation

Other roles that review evidence-heavy drafts follow the same pattern; see what underwriters should learn first. And because the paralegal often works with the firm's IT team on access and matter separation, what IT administrators should learn first is worth reading too.

What does a careful check look like?

Take a litigation team at a mid-sized firm preparing a trial bundle. The agent drafts the index and a 40-entry chronology. The paralegal checks the five entries the case turns on. One says a contract variation was agreed on a certain date, citing an email. The email is the client's own account, declared, sent months later. The actual variation letter in the file, sealed as received, is dated three weeks earlier.

The paralegal corrects the entry, cites the letter, and notes "date taken from client's later email rather than the letter". The supervising lawyer would have relied on that date in cross-examination. The note also feeds the agent's next qualification round, so it learns to prefer the contemporaneous document.

Legal services teams in Singapore and Australia apply this under their own professional and privacy rules; see paralegal training in legal services in Singapore and in Australia.

Which controls keep the work safe?

Matter separation, so the agent sees one client at a time. Correspondence to courts and opponents held for a person. Deadline entries confirmed by a person. Review notes written into the append-only record. Firms building a training plan can use structured courses, such as the Operator track at Pryme Intelligence Academy, for the paralegals who review drafts daily. Questions people ask

Can the agent give the client legal information?

It can draft responses for a lawyer or paralegal to review. Anything that amounts to advice must come from a qualified person under the firm's supervision rules.

Does privilege apply to what the agent sees?

Treat the agent as part of the firm's internal process and keep matter data inside the firm's controlled workspace. Confirm the position with the firm's own risk team.

How much should a paralegal check?

Every fact the case turns on, and a sample of the rest. Provenance shows which facts rest on weak sources and deserve a closer look.
