AI agent skills by role·Answer

Which AI agent skills matter most for operations managers?

For operations managers, the AI agent skills that matter most are reading the workspace, staffing review to the hold rate and owning each agent by name.

Reading the workspace, and knowing from it whether the operation is healthy, is the operations manager's most decisive skill once agents run part of the work. Then come staffing review to match the hold rate, owning each agent by name, deciding when to seek more depth or pull it back, managing certificate renewals, and keeping usage and cost in view.

What does an operations manager actually run when agents arrive?

An operations manager runs throughput, quality and cost for a process: claims, onboarding, fulfilment, payments, support. With agents, the process has two kinds of worker. Agents handle routine cases at the depth they have earned. People handle held items, exceptions, complaints and the decisions the agents are not allowed to make.

The manager's job becomes balancing the two. Too few reviewers and held items age. Too much depth too soon and errors reach customers. The skills below decide which way it goes.

Which skills decide outcomes most often?

  1. Reading the workspace. The workspace shows held items and their age, refusals and the bound that decided them, override rates by reviewer, and agents nearing certificate expiry. A manager who reads it daily spots a problem before a customer does.
  2. Staffing to the hold rate. If an agent holds a fifth of cases, someone must review them within the service level. Rotas built for the old process will not fit.
  3. Owning agents by name. Every agent needs a named owner who answers for its outcomes. In most operations that is the manager, not IT.
  4. Deciding on depth. Depth is earned through Attest evidence, within the role's ceiling. The manager decides when to put a capability up for higher certification and when to narrow the business's own limits after a run of errors.
  5. Managing renewals. Certificates lapse after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day. A manager who plans renewals avoids a sudden surge of manual work.
  6. Watching usage and cost. Agent usage is billed. Managers should know which capabilities drive cost and whether they repay it.

What does the manager watch, and what does it tell them?

Signal in the workspace What it usually means Action
Held items ageing Too few reviewers or unclear approval rights Re-staff or clarify authority
Refusals at role scope rising Requests reaching the wrong agent Fix routing
High override rate for one reviewer Training gap or a sharper reviewer Sample and coach
Certificate near expiry Renewal due Schedule the run away from peaks

What does reading the workspace look like in practice?

Take a regional insurer's claims operation. On Monday the manager sees held items up by half on the motor claims agent, most held at the customer's own limit for repair estimates. No change was made to the agent.

Looking closer, a large repair network raised labour rates the previous week, so routine estimates now exceed the auto-approve limit. The agent is doing the right thing. The manager has two choices: add a reviewer for the week, or ask the limit owner to review the threshold through change control. She does both, in that order. Without reading the workspace, the first sign would have been complaints about slow payments.

Risk and property managers read the same signals for different reasons; see skills for risk managers and skills for property managers.

How should operations managers build these skills?

Spend the first two weeks of any deployment in the workspace each morning with the agent's builder. Map who can approve what using the skills matrix template for an AI agent team. Where the Academy fits

The Operator track at Pryme Intelligence Academy is built for operations managers, reviewers and team leads. Its eight modules include reading the workspace, usage and billing, and running the rhythm. Certified Pryme Operator requires a written exam with a pass mark of 32 of 40 questions and a two-week practicum. The team admin view shows each person's progress, results and certificate expiry.

Questions people ask

How many reviewers does an agent need?

Work from the hold rate and the time a held item takes. Measure both in the first month and adjust; early estimates are usually wrong in one direction or the other.

Should the operations manager also approve held items?

Sometimes, for the highest-value items. But a manager who spends the day approving cannot read the workspace, which is the more valuable job.

Who decides whether an agent gets more depth?

Evidence decides, through certification. The manager decides whether to seek it and owns the outcome once it is granted.
