AI operations jobs in insurance in the Netherlands

AI operations jobs in Dutch insurance: oversight roles at insurers and underwriting agencies, what employers expect, DNB, AFM and EU rules, a plan.

Dutch insurers and underwriting agencies are deploying AI agents for claims, policy administration and intermediary support, and they need staff to supervise them. The roles are agent reviewer, AI operations analyst, knowledge owner and quality lead. Employers look for claims judgement, knowledge of the EU AI Act and GDPR, and review decisions they can check.

How is insurance operations work organised in the Netherlands?

A distinctive feature of the Dutch market is the authorised underwriting agency, the volmacht, which accepts risks and handles claims on behalf of insurers. Alongside large insurers and these agencies sit intermediaries who advise customers and pass on claims. Operations staff therefore work in a chain: an advisor submits a claim, an agency or insurer handles it, and each party needs answers quickly.

Typical work covers property and motor claims, liability, income protection for self-employed people and employees, policy changes, and complaints. Most customer-facing work is in Dutch; some insurers and agencies serving international clients also work in English.

Where are agents being used, and at what depth?

Agents handle the high-volume, rule-based work. People keep the decisions about cover and money.

Use What the agent does Depth What stays with a person
Claims intake from intermediaries Reads the claim form, matches the policy, opens the file 3 Files with coverage questions
Small property and motor claims Settles within the insurer's limit 3 Larger claims and all declines
Income protection claims Checks documents for completeness, drafts requests 2 Every assessment decision
Policy changes Executes routine changes, drafts premium explanations 2 to 3 Changes in cover
Intermediary queries Drafts answers on claim and policy status 2 Disputes

Because so much arrives through intermediaries, provenance matters. A claim submitted through an advisor's connected system is a signed source; a photo forwarded by email is external and cannot by itself authorise a payment. A good reviewer checks which kind of source drove a held decision.

Which AI operations roles can you apply for?

Dutch adverts use titles such as "schadebehandelaar" with an automation focus, "AI operations specialist", "procesanalist" or "kwaliteitsmedewerker". Read the duties for review, exceptions, approvals, quality and escalation.

  • Agent reviewer. Decides held claims and declines drafted by the agent.
  • AI operations analyst. Studies holds and errors, by product or intermediary, and proposes changes to the agent's brief or limits.
  • Knowledge owner. Keeps policy conditions, acceptance rules and letters current.
  • Quality lead. Samples decisions, scores them and reports trends.

The overview of what AI agent jobs exist in insurance compares these roles.

What skills do Dutch employers look for?

Expect a practical, case-based interview. A typical question: "The agent declined a water damage claim under an exclusion, but the intermediary's notes suggest a sudden pipe burst, which is covered. What do you do?" A good answer identifies the source the agent weighed, reviews the wording, decides, and records the reason for the customer and the intermediary.

Show the same habits on paper: anonymised claims you decided, a decision log from a simulated review queue, and a professional certificate an employer can check at source. Many Dutch insurance roles also expect recognised sector diplomas for advice or claims work. The CV template for AI operations jobs in the Netherlands shows how to combine them.

Which rules shape oversight work in Dutch insurance?

De Nederlandsche Bank supervises insurers prudentially and the AFM supervises conduct, including how customers are treated and informed. EIOPA coordinates at EU level. DORA (Regulation (EU) 2022/2554), applicable from 17 January 2025, covers ICT risk management, incident reporting, resilience testing and third-party risk, which includes the platforms agents run on.

The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) entered into force on 1 August 2024. Annex III lists risk assessment and pricing for life and health insurance as high-risk, bringing Article 14 human oversight and Article 26 deployer duties into play where AI is used there. Article 4 asks deployers to ensure their staff have sufficient AI literacy.

GDPR applies to all policyholder data; health data in income protection and health claims is special-category data. Article 22 restricts decisions based solely on automated processing with significant effects, and the national data protection authority enforces the rules. Customers can also take complaints to an independent complaints body, so every decline must be explainable.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

What is a realistic 90-day plan?

First month. Learn depth, the four verdicts and the minimum chain. List five claims you decided, including one you reversed.

Second month. Practise on a simulated queue, keep a decision log and earn a checkable certificate. A free start such as Pryme Intelligence Academy's Foundations badge helps you test whether the work suits you first.

Third month. Apply to insurers, underwriting agencies and claims service firms. Ask your employer about agent pilots. Questions people ask

Are underwriting agencies a good place to start?

Often. They run lean teams with high volumes, which makes them early adopters of agents and keen on reviewers who understand claims.

Is Dutch essential?

For customer- and intermediary-facing review, usually. Analyst roles in international teams sometimes work in English.

What does the agent never do in claims?

It never declines a claim alone. Declines are held for a named person, who decides and records the reason.
